Hello everyone,
Looking for a good mechanic in the Baton Rouge area. I have a 1999 Tourer that was setting up for a while.  Very hard to start (5 to 10 tries at full choke). A once warm run fine but has a rough lope. The bike is all stock, save for 6 to 6 exhaust that I know of. I need someone clean/tune her up. I see some contacts here but they are quite old. Any current info on some that known how to do Valkyrie right would be wonderful.

First, maybe start a new thread?

Befor you take it to a mechanic, sounds like 2 different things. Low battery power. Add a non running vehicle battery to the system with jumpers, see if that helps.

The other is, add a full can of carb cleaner to 1/2 a tank of gas, DRIVE the bike at low RPM (low speeds, high gear), and see if that helps on the engine. May have to be repeated, and maybe with a different cleaner, they all do it a little different. You don't need to drain the tank in one go, let it sit over night a few times, so it can break down the gum & varnish.

I am working in East Texas and don't have time to ride much less work on anything. There is a great independent mechinic in Lafayette (Tom Bellington 337-662-2191). He was a Honda cert. mechanic for years then opened a shop at his house. He only works on Wings and Valks. Tell him that Dusty Rhoads sent you. (He'll charge you double LOL!!!!!)

Well if no one helps you I'll be home in 23 day off the ship. I help a lot of Valkyrie riders out with tune ups. Just send me a PM if help is needed.

Warlock (David) has done wonders for my Interstate.  Runs great.  He is not far away in Mississippi, just a quick run on I-55 or cut through the back roads.

will update more as it goes. Thanks for the advice/offers.

Bob is my mechanic also.  I believe he no longer works on carbs, being retired he kinda picks and chooses his jobs.  He is very reasonable on tire work, I've sent a lot of friends his way.

I agree with Gordanv on everything he said.

I doubt your problem is a sync issue.  Go run a bottle of Techron through it.  I suggest finding a back road and driving it 20 mph in 5th gear with the choke on for 5 minutes at least.

Also, l would monitor the cranking volts, preferbably with an analog meter while it's spinning.  If it drops more than a couple of volts, it will definatly effect the spark.

Once you've eliminated the easy things, if you still have a problem, David (Warlock) is your man.  He comes highly recomended from a lot of people in this area.  I would also consider having him do a "desmog" while he's in there.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I am in Tulsa, OK but I have guys sending me there carbs from all over the country. I do performance work on Valkyries. My normal fee is 500.00 to vat your carbs and o/h them with a new kit and send them back to you. It usually takes about a week. I hope this answers any of your questions.

Regards,

Bob

Lots of rain later, started her up on the third try. Mild smoke for a few seconds then clear. Smells a bit more then normal at idle. Getting better each try. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. Still think I will try out some of the contacts, (thanks again for all of those) for getting a tune up when she stops getting better, when the cleaners have done their best.

Good weather, temp of 80F, started first try at full choke, let run for 60 to 90 sec, slow off the choke to a rough idle, but she stayed running. Now I have never heard a well tuned Valkyrie running so I don't know what she should sound like, but it has the same tempo that my father's old hot rod had. BTW I do have 6 to 6 pipes. A bit of a lope where you can almost hear the firing order of the plugs. Every so often I can hear a slight pop at idle, like a quite version of deceleration pops. Any of this sound right or wrong even?
