What do you do, use the clutch all the time, most of the time, sometimes. What does Honda's recomended.  My old Honda's, (not Valk) I rarely used the clutch. But the Valk dosen't feal like it has the same gears as those bikes. I use the clutch on the valk almost all the time, but do I have to?

I know lots of bikes are constant mesh gears but the pros always say to use the clutch.

Was addressed once before, the shifter system isn't designed/sturdy enough for this type of shifting. Can it be done, yes.  Is it good for it, no.

Clutch.....Always the clutch. Square cut gears are not very forgiving. It will shift without the clutch, but, for how long? cooldude

I frequently upshift and downshift without using the clutch.  Anybody with a little experience (or a broken clutch cable) can do the same thing.  I've done it for over 40 years with every bike and every manual transmission car I've ever owned.  But you all are telling me it's bad for the gears?
And as far as "the pros" saying to always use the clutch- they don't.
YMMV

I use the clutch on the Valk and the Magna. I don't use it for the 13 speed in my rig. So I get the right blend of with/without.

Last 50k on my 98 standard was done with no clutch used for shifting. We will see how long the trans lives.

My Valk upshifts smoothly without the clutch but is difficult to downshift that way. No clutch if I want a smoother shift under power. Am I weird or what?   Embarrassed

If you're weird, then I'm extra weird. It's absolutely quicker and smoother to upshift that way if you're in a hurry... with a little practice it's nearly as quick as an air shifter. (slight upward pressure on the shifter then at desired RPM, a very quick and momentary, partial closing of the throttle... no clunk, no lunge, just instantaneously and smoothly into the next gear as you leave the area at warp speed  Cool

Seriously though... I don't shift without the clutch alll the time, in part because it doesn't work as well at light throttle but I've shifted like this with every bike I've owned when I'm boogyin' and I've never broken anything on any of them.

I used to drag race a stock Z-1 Kawasaki in the seventies with clip on handlebars and rear set foot pegs, four into one headers.  I powershifted clutchless at redline with my left hand.  Didn't seem hurt it. 12.13 at 109 mph best run I ever did. Miss that ol ride.   Cry Hoser

If I have a bike with straight cut gears. I have very rarely used the clutch to upshift.
I do howerver always use the clutch to go from 1st to 2nd through nuetral.
I never really downshift so that isnt an issue.
Ive never had a clutch related issue from not using it to shift.

I used to road race. Never hurt a transmition on any car both up and downshifting at the right rpms.
