Ok, I just broke my choke!!  The cable that is! I see lots of suggestions on how to replace, and also read that someone said they ditched it all together... First question, with the cable off, I'm assuming the choke will always be off? No harm in riding with it detached?? (besides possibly difficulty in starting?)... Are other cable's recommend/available other than the OEM? Part 17950-MZ0-000 Is this just the cable or also the housing? I've read about people replacing and having to thread the cable through, so I was assuming replacing it is just the cable....But I've found one listed that is in the housing....That would be really easy replacement... Thanks in advance... Gordo

cable and housing are together. not bad to replace. helps to tie a string onto one end and pull it through. takes some wiggling but it will go.

I replaced the one on my Interstate. Took about 20 minutes removing the pod. Not a hard job at all

This is what I did when I added the I/S radiator pods and Harley controls. Got rid of that OEM abortion all together. No cable to break, positive action, and it stays where you put it. It still uses the crossover cable connection but that's not where problems develop. This is slick, cheap, and won't break.

Just replaced mine and weaved it through from the bottom, probably would have been better from the top since you have to screw that puppy in, spinning it around from the topside into the housing assy.
I had taped the new cable to the old, tail end old to head end new, and pulled it through with a few choice words and manipulation it came through.
I do like that McGyver version that John did though. Please more pic's and info.

Mine broke at the lever recently, and I took off the left switch assembly and removed the switches (a few small parts to watch out for). Makes screwing the choke cable into it quite easy. As a bonus, it was the perfect time to clean up and lube the turn signal switch!

First, it's all SS so won't be any rusty stuff showing up later. This idea came to me after we were already in bed and I suddenly sat up(she was still awake and reading) and announced I had an idea. At first I got this "not now" look until she saw me pulling my jeans on.  The first pic is a drawing of the various parts, not done to scale I might add.  The second pic shows the flat rod and the rough cutouts made to clear the various parts of the carb ass'y. The two small bolts are more than adequate, just be sure to drape a rag underneath the choke arm to catch the debris while drilling your holes. Although the two small bolts have nylok nuts on them, I still dabbed some loktite on the threads. You're restricted as to size simply because of the linkage cover that mounts over it. The two larger bolts on the arm with the knob also use nylok nuts and when snugged down will hold any position you set it on.  The third pic attempts to depict how I mounted the actuating arm support. The long red line represents the long rod that holds the carb bank together and is threaded on each end. If you back off the nut at the front just behind the radiator and tap that rod to the rear, it gives you enough space to mount the "L" shaped bracket on the back end of the rod. Again, I suggest some Loktite on that nut. It's a very simple setup, very effective, and is easy to install. Hope this helps.

I like Herr Schmidt's setup but I never got around to duping it. I have been without the choke since I put the drag bars on last July and haven't really needed it. On the few days cold enough to need the choke I just used a coin to push the rail.

Got a chuckle out of that, I'm mostly Italian but was adopted by a German couple when not much more than a babe in arms. As a side note....wonder if I could make any money fabbed up a few of those and selling them. Hmmm.....naww, that's why I retired. But anyone is welcome to copy it, as long as they hang a tag on it giving credit for the development. Yeah....like I'm really serious with that one!!! Go for it, anybody.

If you do replace the cable, it is not a hard job, if you adjust it right you can eliminate the last quarter inch being so hard, you just have to hold it down as it warms up, which only takes 30 seconds It runs as normal with the cable partially enriched for the next couple minutes as you ride off, then you push it to the top. You can also start it with a broken cable by pushing on the tab that shows on the left side with a flathead screw driver. It's a lot eaiser do do it than describe it. Take a look, that's how I started it while waiting on my cable. Hoser

I'm not going into production. If you were close by and wanted to stop over one afternoon....maybe then I'd help out. I did the drawings for Normand(Quexpress) a while back so he could make up a set for himself. It's easy enough to do.
