Honda says to just coat with grease because the drive oil is supposed to circulate.

After you clean out all the crud, make sure the 2 holes at the bottom of the pinion cup are clear.  (use a wire or blow air in briefly) One hole delivers the oil and the other drains it back to the final drive.  If you tilt the drive cup-down, oil should start to come through the holes.

I coat the splines with grease (moly) and then also drizzle some drive oil in the cup and on the shaft to cup seal.  It's important that this seals to promote circulation.

Shaft before cleaning (note the oil coating):

Oh, now you've done it. You had to go and ask "that" question. Now you're in trouble.

Do you not have a manual, it tells how much lubrication to place onto that part.

I agree with the above post by wild6, but I haven't taken it apart and looked at it to compare.

How do I seperate the drive shaft from the pinion cup? I had mine apart last week, but couldn't pull them apart. I didn't want to force anything. New Avons going on this week and would like to check this part out. Drive splines look good. Thanks.

I put a towel down so I don't scratch/damage the pumpkin, then hold it up an inch or so above the towel by the driveshaft, then tap the pinion cup with a hammer or something. Just pops out.

Pulling on it, moving it side to side to compress the clip on the end will get it out. No large hammers or tools needed.
