I can not remember my last bad day

« on: March 26, 2012, 09:54:10 AM »

Well I am 2 weeks post surgery and what a wild time it has been. The surgery went very well and there are no complications with the new hip. The problems I had were post surgery. I was discharged from the hospital 3.5 days after the replacement. Against my complaints of hot and cold sweats with shivering, and not being able to pass my bowels. The internal Med Dr told me that he saw nothing wrong with my blood or urine results and that I was going home, so I did. With in 8 hours I was shivering so bad my wife said our king size solid oak 4 poster bed was moving. I sat up and began coughing up blood. I told her to call the ambulance. Within one hour I have been put into a MICU unit for Pneumonia and a septic infection. After 2 days I was moved to most likely the best private room in the hospital. This room had a large flat screen, crown molding, real wood furniture, beautiful bathroom fixtures, and so on. I would hit the switch for a nurse and it seemed like they were there within moments seeing what I needed. I even had a menu I could order off of for each meal, and the food was much better than in the ortho unit. I was finally sent home with a couple days on IV antibiotics left which were finished yesterday evening. I am having very little pain in my hip, I am more soar than anything. I am able to walk some around the house without the walker but not more than about 15 steps or so. All in all I am happy with the procedure at this point and will begin a full Physical Therapy program tomorrow to get me back into shape.

I want to take a moment to tell you how grateful I am for all the support that the people of the VRCC has shown. The cards, calls, emails, and visits have been an inspiration. The VRCC is certainly much more than another motorcycle forum. For those that have taken an extra step and purchased items from me I hope to begin packing some items by the end of the week. On Wen the therapist is going to go out to the garage with me and we are going to see what he thinks about me being able to get around out there for short periods of time.

Thank You All Again

don't know ya personally, but congrats on such a successful surgery.  My dad had hip surgery and his recovery time was more like months, not weeks.  Surely do not push it too hard and if get any ill side effects take very seriously, hip replacement surgery is very serious stuff.  Hope you are up and riding this summer for sure!  Take care!!

Great News Mike!

My wife had her hip replaced and 10 years later it was still in excellent condition.  Mind the therapist and you'll be back ready to go very soon.

Mike, ditto here what Steve says.   Been there, done that on hip and a knee.  Just make damn sure you follow the therapists suggestions, actually orders.

Otherwise, it is kind of like a piece of cake.

Mike, it was good to see you were doing so good when we visited last week. Now remember what we agreed to, when you're ready and able, call me and I'll pick you up and get you out of the house for lunch (on me this time).  BTW, those BBQ sandwiches were great.
