My "NEW" 1999 Valk Interstate.

S.E. Indiana

« on: March 27, 2012, 10:06:43 AM »

Been looking for a company that makes/sells GOOD after market speakers for my Interstate. I saw the post about the guy who bought POLK speakers, but had to cut up the base plates to get them to fit. .....No thanks. I found and talked to a rep for "J&M motorcycle audio". He tells me that their speaker for my 1999 are FAR superior to the O.E.M. And will fit with NO modifications. He also says that they (model# USK900) are the SAME speakers that are used for the 1999 GOLD WING. Any thoughts on this? Anyone bought their speakers?

I sold my beloved Honda VTX so I could get a TOURING bike to allow my wife to be more comfortable on long trips. Can't afford; nor do I subscribe to the Harley "hype". Wanted to stay with Honda quality. And as I'm still young enough to want a "COOL" looking tourer; the Valk Interstate is for me.

Hey,

For what its worth, the Mods to make the Polks fit is minor....

It took me a couple of hours to do all 4 on my I/S with a Dremel..... And it doesn't really hurt the stock parts....

Depends on the price of the other speakers...

You may want to look at a pair of 4 1/4"  2-way JL Audio speakers.
You may find them at "high end" car stereo installers,...but they are not very costly and they sound great.
Remember to cover your speaker enclosures with "Dyna Mat" to reduce unwanted harmonics.

On my 1800 Wing, some guys use Polk DB501's. There's a small mod required but these Polks are waterproof. That's why they're used. J&M's are good but the Polks are better.

I think the J&M speakers you mentioned are a good set from others I have heard.  I think 4 1/2" in front and 4" in rear.  I am looking to get a set and thinking those would be a good buy vs. the stock OEM honda front speakers in my Interstate.  Have also heard that we really should stick with 3 ohm rating as J&M's are vs. Polk audio being 4 ohms, but not really sure if that will cause issues or not?

I would think Polk audio or J&M speakers are both good bets to use if can find a decent deal on them.

Here is a website that lists a couple speakers with the Polk Audio now cheaper than the show chrome speakers:  http://www.electricalconnection.com/audio/speaker_gl15&valk.htm
but like I said Polk audio may require some cutting to fit and are 4 ohm rated vs. show chrome and J&M being 3 ohms as recommended.

Momz, I have Alpine speakers on my I/S.  I didn't reuse the Honda enclosures in the fairing.  I lined the inside surface of the fairing and the back side of the speaker panels with DynaMat.  Sounds better without the enclosures.

I found that a speaker change alone did not give me the sound quality that I was after.  After a long deliberation and soul searching, I went with the Kennedy Tech products to enhance the sound on my I/S.  It was an expensive mod, but the sound is better than the Bose system in my wife's car...Jim Grin

So, WHATs this "Dyna-mat" stuff? and where do I get it? I'll call the rep back at J&M, and tell him to send me some.
