Hello all, I just want some input from the Guru's here. My 03 valk has had the 6 degree Trigger Wheel put on before I got it and I was wondering about the gas I should buy. You see there are 2 stations where I live that offer 87 Ethanol free gas ($4.14 today) I like using the ethanol free fuel but will gladly pay the $4.19 for super unleaded. So my question is what should I be using ? It runs great on the Ethanol free, but the Gentleman that I bought the bike from told me that he put the Trigger wheel in and that I should use Premium gas. I just want to do whats best for my sweet lady. Thanks, Tony

I have a 4* TW and the I/S ICM in an '01 Standard. I have the luxury of an ethanol free station between my home and work.. Without the mods, she ran great on regular. When I added the mods I continued with regular for a short time, but she did not seem to have the same power.. I moved to mid-grade then to premium.. She runs the best on premium (93).

I have a '99IS that came with a 4* wheel (no other mod), and I must run premium or I knock badly (unless I drive like grandad). It will be coming out. (And my lower miles other '99 IS with original trigger wheel runs just as good or better on regular) (and there is no no-ethanol gas anywhere within a 3-4 hour ride)

My Standard runs fine on regular with ethanol but runs better with mid-grade. I can tell no diff with high test.

I have a 99 Interstate with a 4 degree TW. Mine runs best on mid grade, either straight or ethenol. I can hear knock on regular. I average about 38 mpg almost all the time on midgrade. If I have to run regular, mileage drops to 32 or so. Midgrade here is about 10 cents more per gallon, so the cost is offset by better mileage and smoother running. I have no idea if the bike is faster with the TW, as the bike had it in it when I got it

Hey Tony , I added the 6 degree T/W and I noticed that my Fat Lady had a slight ping , so I have been using Super Unleaded since and no pinging problems .. I wished Texas would get rid of this ethynol crap , because before my baby ran damn great on the plain -o - vanillia gas non-ethynol GOOD GAS , before they switched to this ethynol crap ... If your baby ain't pinging , then I would stick to the Ethynol free GOOD GAS mid-grade and enjoy riding ... Thanks the Geezer

Whether the trigger wheel creates better performance should be the principle question (faster and/or better mileage). I have never done (and will never do) a dyno. Butt dynos are notoriously unreliable. I never keep track of gas mileage, other than routinely noting how many miles to reserve (around 220 with both bikes) after religiously resetting the trip meter at every fillup. (I fill clear to the top, except when the pump feed is too fast, then as much as a buck less gas)
Two '99 ISs, one with, one without. The one with may run a few higher rpms than the other, but it's no faster. Butt dyno says no appreciable difference, so long as I run premium in the 4* bike. Even mid grade knocks. So I think the only appreciable difference between them is more expensive premium, for the identical fun.
Personally I think the trigger wheels are 90% voodoo, and 10% something else (but I'm not sure what).
This is IS (with the IS ecm and carb springs), I have no opinion on a 6* in a tourer/std.

I installed the 6 degree wheel on my 97 after getting her running. Before the wheel it stumbled a bit during acceleration from a dead stop. Used all three grades of gas it ran the same so all I run now is regular. Now that I have 13,000 more miles on it since then I am plannning to go back to the stock wheel to see if anything is noticeable. Power or mpg. More mpg would be good.

4* + IS ICM in '01 Standard gets 2-3 more MPG. can't lug it. previously I could get on it in 5th from about 2K.. now gotta downshift to get the revs up, then crank it.

Thanks for all the info. The 2 stations that are around my house replaced the mid grade with the ethonal free ( marine gas ) and like I said it is 87 octane. I get about 32mpg right now but I will switch to Super for a while and see if there is any difference in either perfomance or mileage. Thanks again will report back with what I find. Tony
