TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!

First, we survived being born to mothers
Who smoked and/or drank while they were
Pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing,
Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode
Our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children,
We would ride in cars with no car seats,
No booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
Was always a special treat.

We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends,
From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon.
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And, we weren't overweight.
WHY?

Because we were
Always outside playing...that's why !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
As long as we were back when the
Streetlights came on.

No one was able
To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill, only to find out
We forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones, No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
And the worms did not live in us
Forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and,
Although we were told it would happen,
We did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
Knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal
With disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
Was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years
Have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?
CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others
who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the
lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know
how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house
with scissors, doesn't it ?  Wink

My mother still talks/regrets all those long trips we made to grandma's in the '59 Ford, with three kids in back with no seatbelts, and both parents smoking Pall Mall non filters with the windows up.  She used to make us piles of really greasy home made potato chips to take to the drive in too.  And I remember spending most of the summer with no shoes on of any kind.  After a few weeks, running on gravel, rocks and broke glass was no big deal.

Today, the number of safety stickers on a new ladder adds three pounds to the ladder.  crazy2

Also born in '53.

Born in '56.
Mom used to tell me about the cardboard box with the baby in it sitting on the front bench seat.
When slowing-down, she'd put her arm out to stop it from sliding off. (Into the steel dash)

But they wouldn't let me get a motorcycle.  Finally got one at the age of 50.  My Dragon.

LOVE this!  born in '63 and did just about ALL that was written about.

my dad owned his own well business and he had a 'smeal' which pulled the pumps out of the wells.  it rested high on and above the cab, of the bed part of the truck.  my brother and i would ride on top of it as he would take us to the tastee freeze about 20 minutes away for ice cream.  a great memory. we had a great childhood....

Born 1945. Mom and Dad would paddle our asses if we needed it. Never felt the need to kill them cause they did. I KNOW it made me a much better man. I take responsibility for my own actions. Raced many home made carts and bicycles. Lotsa mechanical screw ups but i learned how to do things the right way. Dads tutelage led me to be an aircraft mechanic in the Navy. I just hope and pray i was able to instill some of what i learned in my own children. Learned how to get by when money is tight. cooldude Should have completed my education but getting married changes a lot of things. Grin Makes me kinda wonder where i might have been had my parents not cared enough to correct the mistakes the saw me making. uglystupid2 Didn't realize how smart my folks were til after they were gone. coolsmiley RIDE SAFE.

Born in '47.  Survived bikes with no helmets and the smallest bikes were 24" so we crashed daily.  Rode in cars with no seat belts, then in cars with seat belts tucked under the seats.  Air bags??  No way!  Flew in airplanes without "no smoking" sections.  When I was in jr. high, a number of kids had Cushman Eagles and rode without any protective gear, and some died.  In HS, we frequently headed out to the woods to shoot centerfire rifles and pistols with no adult supervision.  Even had a M2 carbine to shoot (selective fire - - fully automatic).  Got my driver's license at 15.  Learned to swim in the ocean - - no lifeguards.  Etc, etc...

Most of us survived until Vietnam.

Well since I started this let me tell you...I was born in 41 and I know all about ass whippings when I deserved it. When i was a kid  me and my brother would  take our dog (King,a German Shepard) our 22rifles and go camping...with the hobos  down at the brickyard by the RR tracks. We would share the food we brought from home with them and eat hobo stew.We never worried about  child molesters.Hobos at that time did do odd jobs ans had some money they just liked to not have home ties.
I took a gun to school every Thursday, I was on the rifle club and we went to an indoor shooting range and competed against other schools. We went swimming at B.A.B (bare ass  beach)  and dove off the trestle. We use to have rock and slingshot fights (for fun ) with other neighbor kids. That was just to name a few  adventures...them really were the good old days and I have the scars to prove it!  Smiley

Born in '64...   Survived having only 6 TV stations not even in color and being outside morning til night..  running with friends through the woods...   playing with matches,  lighting firecrackers,  picking up dead rodents (and some live ones).   Playing sports in the street (calling "TIME" and letting a car go by).   We all rode our bikes and made ramps of stacked wood and bricks to jump stuff (like Evil Knievel).. we even laid down to get jumped over.  Can't count how many times we crashed or got hurt..  but we all lived.
12 yrs of catholic school...  and if I came home from school with a mark from a paddle or slap or hit with rosary beads (usually because I was a smarta**),  I'd be sure to get a punishment at home as well.

I had to wear an eyepatch (not because of anything we did) and then glasses...  guess what?  I survived the pirate jokes..  I made it through all of the  four-eyes comments.  And when my friend was the first to get braces,  we teased metal-mouth too.  Another friend was slow to grow and ended up as "shorty".
Not sure how my friends and I survived when we didn't get a trophy just for playing on a team.
