What length do you recommend to replace original shocks (longer or shorter or originional length) and what is the differance between HD and regular.

I have 13 inch HD 440s and wouldn't want for them to be shorter...

I started out with the non-HD spring, but like the HD spring much
better...

I also have the 13 inch 440 HD's. Have had them for a couple of years and when I bought them from a dealer on the left coast, progressive had a free front fork springs special if you bought thier shocks. I recently sent my shocks to progressive to be looked over and they replaced all the bushings and both of the top covers and lubricated the shocks and polished them up for me. They Had it in on a monday and was back to me by friday. They Look great and it was all done for FREE !!!! Only had to pay for the shipping to them. They do have a Lifetime Warranty if you have the Original Sales Receipt from a dealer. They WILL NOT accept receipts from Ebay sales at all for the lifetime warranty just to give you a heads up on that. You will enjoy them and if you plan on keeping your Valk like I plan on keeping my Death Horse then it is a wise investment. Always ride safe my friends  cooldude

The shock length would probably depend on your inseam.. Its been so long I don't the length of mine, but, they are either 12.5 or 13".. I'm 6"2" 220# and JoAnn is about 140#[who knows what their wife weighs] and I think the standard springs work just fine, I leave them at about 6 or 7 turns.. I don't remember ever riding one with the HDs..

and what is the difference between HD and regular. Santa

I think the PS website says about 220lbs is the recommended point to go from Std to HD shocks for Std/Tourer (but I'm not certain, go look).  The internals on 440s are all the same, only the springs make them Std or HD, and the springs can be changed for relatively cheap.  And Interstates are recommended to only use HD (though at 185lbs I used the Std rate on my supervalk IS, and it rides great, 4-turns out).  I have the HD on my other IS (full size) and they are also great, but they have never left the softest setting.

PS has very good tech support/advice, and you should call them and ask about Std v. HD for you (plus wife/gear?).

Thanks
I'm 5'9" tall and 250lbs a perfect Santa shape. With my Original shocks most of the time I'm on my toes at stops, so I was thinking of going with a shorter shock but woundered about any problems with a shorter shock?

I recently installed a set 0f 11 1/2" 440's on my bike. I still had the original shocks and they seemed weak and were noisy in operation. I bought the 440's from a member on the classifieds and they seem to be in great shape. I have a big boy seat and at 5'8" I wasn't able to flat foot unless loaded down. I have the bike set up for solo riding now and figured the lowered shocks would be ok and look good too. They are stiff, I haven't made any adjustments, but the handling is much improved, the ride good while being very firm, and the ride height great for me.

I run with a pair of 13" progressive 412's.
My inseam is 29.5" and with both feet down I'm half up on my toes.
Even so, I wouldn't want shorter shocks because I run twisties a lot and scrape my pegs even with 13" shocks.
If they were shorter, I'd have to knee-drag to prevent scraping. Shocked

Santa, as to shock length, you have to decide based on your riding style.  I am also 5'9" (185), with a long body and short legs, and I have no problem putting my feet down with lowrider and bigboy seats with 13" shocks at most flat stops.  I may not always be comfortably flatfooted but I can get there if I get up on the seat. And I am often only left foot down, with right on the brake (which believe it or not can be more stable than both feet down).  But I ride in a sporting manner and drag boards, and go looking for the best twisty/elevation roads I can find.  So I want all the turning clearance I can get.  I traded away 12.5 440s to get 13s on my second bike.

But many here use 11.5, 12, 12.5 shocks and like them.  All function perfectly as suspension, except the shorter you go, the less travel you get.  You can go to any shorter length and get your feet down a bit easier, but you do give up a little turning clearance to get it.

You could easily go to 12.5 and probably not even notice the difference in ordinary riding.  The only difference I could find between 13s and 12.5s was I drug the boards sooner.   And remember, an inch at the shocks is somewhat less than an inch at the pegs/boards.  I would not go lower than 12 in any evet, but that's me.

Do you run a Lowboy seat (an inch under stock)?  Wear tall sole boots?

You have not said if you ride an IS or std/tourer or if you carry a passenger regularly.  At 250 I think you need the HD shock.  They come set to the lowest/cushiest setting (with ten turns of adjustment).  It sounds to me like you want a 12.5 or 12 HD440.  I could be wrong.
