wow, .22's sure have gone up. I like the old school wood grain look of the ruger 10/22 that I have had for about 15 years with a 10 shot rotary clip think I paid around 225 bucks for back then. Prices sure have gone up but your pic has a composite stock with looks like a stainless barrel adding to the price. Not saying it is not nice, but seems pricey for a just a .22
I've been looking at buying a pistol in .22 or larger, something cheap to plink around with. Any ideas for a semi-auto pistol on the reliable, yet cheaper side and where to buy?

Well the "takedown" feature allows the rifle to break down into two pieces with the manipulation of a spring-loaded pin. That adds significantly to the price (as does the poly stock and SS receiver and barrel. Not that a standard 10/22 is all that big but makes it that much easier to strap to the rack of a quad or fit in the bin under the floor of my Pathfinder.

are you going to get a 4x scope for it to be really accurate?
Yah, those extras surely add another 100 bucks or more onto the price, but hey, you only live once and if you like it and fits your needs, why not.

Well I really like iron sights for plinking but it comes with a scope rail so maybe I'll try an optic on there. I could also use my Vortex SPARC because I have it on a LaRue QD mount.

My son and I turned an older 10/22 in to a lil' Tack Driver... Big fun and inexpensive to plink all day Probably the most trouble free bang stick I own. Can get balky when using cheap ammo (gets dirty quick), but keep it clean, and yer good to go. Bedded a 'Green Mountain' fluted target bull barrel, in a thumb hole laminated stock with a raised cheek pad (this was just rough cut, and needed shaping, sanding, and finishing) and a nice 8X scope. My son can cover 10 shots at 75 yds, with a dime My eyes are not quite as good No picture handy, as I'm at work, but I'll post one later. Black Dog

MkIII's are kind of outlandish. But when you're the industry standard for the category you can charge a premium. Man, I just happened to look at some used Winchester model 52's online. Some of them are selling for MANY THOUSANDS of dollars. Makes me wonder what happened to all of the beautiful, heavy barrel, Lyman sight equipped examples we had on hand for our rifle team back in the late 80's. Knowing the state of Massachusetts they probably cut them up and melted them down.

They're made right here in NH too. Too bad they're not closer because I'd take a pay cut to go work for them but the commute would be hellish.

Interesting little 10/22.
I picked up a new MKIII 22/45 RP around Christmas. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but supposed to be very accurate. I have had a .30 caliber SS Ranch rifle for years; neat little rifle and worked well on wild boar and coyotes.

I have a stainless 10/22 with aftermarket rubber stock, bipod and scope and also have a lil Tactical Ruger Charger (pictured below) with a 50rd Drum, 30 round mags and a Red Dot.... fun fun fun. Driving factor of a Take Down model is for space saving or hiding/stowing.... interesting, but I bet a Charger is about as long as that is broke down. Fudgie..... where are you getting the 50rd banana mags at? I only saw/have 30rds but they do snap together and you can flip em over after one is emptied.

On the 10/22, I've had HORRIBLE luck with all the after-market larger magazines, but I was delighted to see Ruger FINALLY got the hint and now make a factory 25-round magazine for the 10/22's: http://www.ruger.com/micros/BX-25/index.html?r=y(Warning, website talks to you without asking you first. Pet peeve of mine.) I've had one of the BX-25 mags for a few months, have put about 1,000 rounds through it with no problems thus far...

The Mini14 is another Ruger I really like along with the Vaquero and Mk.III pistols. Oh and they make a nice piston driven AR (SR556) that I wouldn't mind owning.

Congratulations on the 10/22 Anvil. I recently picked up a 10/22 stainless with the synthetic stock. I also bought a fantatic Leupold Gold Line scope for it. The scope and the 10/22 were about the same price at $215.00 and $250.00 from Dick's Sporting Goods. There are as many modifications you can make to these rifles as you can imagine. I simply don't see the need I guess. Box stock with CCI Mini Mags from a rest at the range, it'll put 10 rounds into a hole half the size of a dime. It's MUCH more accurate than I am. The one thing I absolutely reccomend is to get the Tri Mag magazine holder. I personally don't like the banana mags or the drums as they're in the way when shooting off hand. The Tri Mag is ideal in that it holds 3 factory 10/22 magazines. Here's a link to it. http://www.cabelas.com/magazines-clips-alangator-trade-trimag-trade-factory-10-22-magazine-coupler-1.shtmlAll the best, Mark

Man, I love the 10/22's. I bought a beater a couple of years ago for $100 just to get the receiver. It wouldn't fire 10 rounds between jams but the guy owned several and I think put his oldest parts in this one to sell. I put on a heavy barrel and matched stock (butler creek I think, maybe $200 for both). A Volquartsen hammer pack and bolt release, an extended mag release, a trigger job and some stoning and polishing here and there and it's turned into a real sweet gun and I still don't have much money in it. I really like the way the new bolt release works, just pull back the bolt a little when it's locked back and the lock drops back down without doing anything else. I still plan on drilling and taping an overtravel screw into the trigger or buying a trigger with it installed. I'm a scope guy and added a spare 3 by 9 by 40 scope I had on hand. If I find another beater cheap I'll probably start on another one. There is just something I like about firearms that are easy to change barrels on.

That would be a very handy firearm. You could probably stow it in a Valk saddlebag and head West for prairie dogs if you were so inclined. Or just to the range, I always like pulling up at the range on the scooter when possible.

Just about every firearm that Ruger made has evolved and the 10/22 is one of them. I bought my son Mark a 10/22 when he was 13 or so. I paid about $60.00 for it and it has a walnut stock. He still has it and has an additional new 10/22 SS barrel, etc. Altogether we have quite a few 10/22's in the family.
Anvil, speaking about the model 52's, they are a classic in the true sense of the word. I have the cheaper version of the 52. It is a model 75 target rifle with Lyman globe front sight and Lyman micro peep rear. I bought it 30 years ago for $50.00 Being a dumbarse, I had the barrel cutdown and the target railed stock changed to a sporter style. Although they made the 75 in sporter version, mine is now not original. However, it's still capable of true tackdriver accuracy.
I also have two Vaquero's one in .44 mag (faux heat treat frame) and the 'new' Vaquero in .357 mag. The new vaquero is much easier to remove the spent cases as the cylinder chambers now are exactly lined up with the ejection port when it 'clicks'

I bought it at the gun show years ago. I'm guessing 20 yrs ago or so. I think it was before the 'Clinton gun ban' stuff. I remember there being alot of them back then. It was like $20 or so. I'll have to look to see who makes it but its all solid black. I have not seen any in the last 10 yrs. I like it, it makes a good gun rest for them critical shots!
