Does anyone know of a gas guage for a Valkyie. Most of the time the odometer is fine for estimating but once in a while if I am bucking a big wind or cruising a little faster than normal I have been caught by surprise and hit reserve quite early. It has been as low as 85 miles and as high as 130 miles.

i have actually been looking at sonic sensors that connect to a dial/digital gauge. These are used in large water holders and water treatment plants to gauge water depth and amount of liquid in containers. I have found two that might do the job, they can be calibrated set under the gas tank on the outside and then then send an electionic signal to either a digital or analog gauge that adjusts as the tank gets emptied.
Problem is i can find one that would run on 12 volt systems and need to find a way to read the shape of the valk tank. i am working with a enginner pal to find something that might work and will let all know if it does. But I think that sonic is the way to go so we dont have to drill into the tank with some volume sensor.

The other way would be a IS tank with sender, and a gauge (Motosens, i.e.).

Not having seen the underside of an I/S tank, what would the chances be of soldering in a mounting for a normal I/S sending unit, and is there enough room in the Std. tank for the float to swing? Then it would be a factory part to get the sender, and then Motosen's guage...

I would love to do an IS tank but would hate to pay for a new paint job.

Have you looked at this one? http://www.ssitechnologies.com/PDF/Application%20Notes/AT_AN4_FuelLevel_Product_Overview.pdf

I believe a hole could be put in the bottom of a standard tank, and an IS sender used. Not sure, but I think so. Might possible hit the inside top of the tank when full of gas.

I just did this upgrade with the IS tank. I'd estimate the total cost between the tank, paint job, fuel sender for the tank and motosen fuel gauge was roughly,,,,,,, $1,500.00. Now ask me if it was worth it! Definitely!!!!! Not only do I have an increased driving range due to the larger fuel capacity, but I now know how much fuel I have left. I've read many reviews regarding the accuracy of these motoen gauges. Also,, as a side bonus, I had a custom decal made up from Purple Harley and had that decal placed on the tank during the paint job so she's under the clear coat!!. Yeah,,, I'm satisfied!

How accurate has it been at fuel prediction?

I have had mine for about 3 years and I had a few issues but customer service is great. I have never used the fuel gauge enough to say how well it works. Have them program your odometer reading into the permanent odometer and if you actually wanted to you could drop your stock gauges. The veypor draws a lot of attention. Just keep you a sandwich bag so if it starts raining it does not get wet.

if i am understanding this correctly you are actually going off your odom meter (this do hicky is calculating your rate of fuel in accordance with your odom reading rather than actual fuel level right? rather than an actual fuel sender cause the standard valk dont have one
yes no...
