I am prepping for a trip and as part of the maintenance, read that changing the Final Drive Oil is recommended, but could not find out how often.   Any suggestions on how often or issues that may arise.

I do mine at every tire change, or whenever I have the right-side exhaust off. Use a good synthetic gear lube and the stuff will last longer between changes. Spec'd interval is (IIRC) either 16,000 or 24,000 miles.

An easy to find synthetic is Pennzoil. Wal Mart sells it as a Marine lower drive unit gear oil. 75Wx90 with the required GL5 rating for our drive units. About $7 and has 6 changes in it. I do mine annualy.

I do mine every 10,000 miles, which is every air filter change and every other oil change.

I believe the "good book" says every 16,000 miles...simple procedure...I use a plastic tube to get the oil in.  I also replace the seals.  FYI, the final drive drain plug seal is the same as the engine oil drain plug seal! Wink

Never hurts to do maintenance early! cooldude

Make sure to replace the o ring on the plug, and don't try to over torque it.
You will break it right off.
The plug is cast, not solid aluminum.

I do my rear end every 10,000 miles. That is when I pull my rear end for service and the splines, and pinion joint.
