I got a 2006 model. It keeps telling me to go online and upgrade ($69.00). Has anyone done this and is it worth the cost?? Undecided

I have a 2620 Garmin that I upgraded.   In some areas it helped, and in a couple of areas it gave me fits.  Would I do it again at the tune of $75.00, NOPE.......

I'll just buy a later model that already has the new maps supposedly on it..........

One of the guys I do Dealer Trades with bought one, a cheapie, I think it was a TomTom or something along that nature.  It is voice activated, it does have a few OFF ROUTE - RECALCULATING on it.  Mostly from where they changed the road.  The road you will be driving on looks like it has been there awhile, but I think it has been rejuvenated so off route comes up.

i've had a 2610 for a number of years.
other than the free 1st one i got, i've done 2 map updates since.
did them every 2 years.
i think garmin has a plan now for lifetime updates for about $120, and you can do 4 per year.
you can check their website for the details.
the updates did pick up roads that previously weren't mapped.
i think if you travel a lot, in unfamiliar territory, the updates can be very useful for gas locations, food, lodging.

my 2610 has been on a "crap-out" routine for awhile.
touch screen stopped working, (garmin repair $225) started using the remote control.
then 1 function on a button stopped working.
and then a 2nd button stopped working.
so, recently replaced the ole reliable 2610 with a nuvi 765T.
i like it, but still learning the functions

Thanks guys,

I think I will hold off for a while, my unit works great and the most I use it for is--- hit the home button after I have rode most of the day lost just to see what I could see.   cooldude

Dont worry about the updates or buying new units....or buying GPS units at all.  They said on the news last night that the satellites used for GPS navigation may not make it through the end of next year.  Theres no $$ to maintain them so they are expected to crap out soon.

i heard that too.........and just bought a new one a few weeks ago.
Yea but Obama sure creates enough money to be buying up a lot of private enterprise to enhance his kingdom, and sell off some to payback the UAW

does the military use the same system as us? seems it would have to be kept up for militaristic purposes.

Ya Ken one would think........but there was not a lot allocated in any of the big money so far to strengthen the military.  I sure hope "president" Obama isnt planning on outdoing Bill Clinton in the let the military shrivel up and die move!!!!!!!!!
