The wife is headed for the east coast on a 1300 mile (each way) road trip.
Her mother passed away yesterday, after a long battle with Alzheimers. She's headed out to the funeral and to help her Dad straighten things up a bit.
It's been expected...the mother got last rites Saturday...she had not responded to anything in days...but during the rites, opened her eyes and said to the minister, "But...I've always been a good girl." Then nothing more.
Alzheimers sucks.
Yeah, expected. Still difficult. She's only in her 60's.

Only in her 60's.
That sucks.
My stepmother suffered for the last 7 years of her life until her brain could take no more.
It's a terrible disease.

Going thru the same thing with my step-father. Has a Phd. in Education and now, has to be led around. Alzheimer's is a thief of memories and existence. Prayers to the family over your loss, plus for Carey's safe journey to and back.

Prayers out to your wife, her father and family! My Mom has Alzheimers and I have been her caregiver now for 3 years, although she has had the disease for alot longer, the courts said she needed a guardian/conservator and they picked me. I just had to put her in a nursing home, that was a very sad day indeed. Yes, this disease SUCKS!!! At least her Mom isn't suffering and confused any more. Hoping your wife has safe travels on her trip. Take Care!

So sorry for your family's loss to this dreaded disease. My mom this past year was just diagnosed with altzheimers and dr. said she has probably had it the past 3-4 years unbeknown to us all. Dr. would not let her go home and had to put her into an assisted living home. Next week we are going to try to let her go home with daily in home care for an hour per day for now since she does not like being away from home the past 5 months going bankrupt. If this doesn't work out which I know it won't in the long run, it is going to be very, very difficult getting her back out of her house and into assisted living yet again. WE hope it works out and this disease doesn't get worse anytime soon since she is only 69 years old and otherwise in decent health physically. The real problem is she has no one to talk to nor friends to visit with just sitting in the house pretty much doing nothing besides search a word, cleaning, and watching TV since my dad passed away Xmas night in 2008. Loosing your mind is in many ways worse than going out with physical conditions and I know seems harder for us anyways to cope with it.
Wishing for your wife's safe trip as well and hope you all can find the strength to endure this terrible loss in your lives. take care!

Understand. My wife's mother left this good green earth less than two years ago. Alzheimer's. Age mid '70s. Spent nine months in assisted living till the curtain call. Watched her rapidly decline on a monthly basis from a whole thinking person down to nothing -- the end. Was very difficult. Such is life. I guess. Thoughts with you and yours.

Daniel, so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, the loss happens long before the person will pass. Alzheimers seems to be kicking in on more and more these days. Our family has been touched by this, also. My Mother in law has been suffering with this for a number of years. She is 69, and now is less than 100 lbs. I am guessing that she has little time left. It is so tragic to see one incrementally lose the abilities to do day to day things: balance a checkbook, to read, to reason, to speak. They become a different person, and this hurts all who love them. I hope your family can start to heal and get through this.

Alzheimers, cancer, heart failure, stroke......some may seem worse than others when we witness what they've done to someone we love and care for, but as we know non are pleasant. I recognize that the words mean little from someone you don't know, just the same, because I can relate ever so closely I will just add that I hope that a peace may now fall upon your family.

Talked to her last night after she just pulled in at her grandmother's house. That's one, 1300 mile trip out of the way.
She called me yesterday afternoon...from just west of Asheville..."I think I'm lost!"
She as an atlas AND a GPS.
I say, "Well, keep heading east, eventually you'll hit the Pacific Ocean and then you'll know where you are at! A moment goes by...then, "If I head east, I'll hit the Atlantic Ocean! Me, "See! You're not as lost as you thought!"
