OK, back in Amarillo, I could get my K&N cleaned and recharged for about 20 bucks. Called a PEP boys and he quoted me 50 bucks.  Headed down to O'Riely's to get the 8 buck kit and do it my own damn self.  I just thought I could get it cleaned while I had the tank off and was putting on the new right side control unit.

What do you guys do?

The person that installed the filter put back both OEM gaskets. Box would not seal so I took the old seals off, did some caliper measurements and the thing will seal without the OEM gaskets.  Then I looked at the K&N site. It says to remove the OEM gaskets.

  tickedoff

Because they did not install the pre-fliter.  Should I buy a new filter with the prefilter or just clean/recharge the air filter more often?

I have always cleaned my own K&N filter.......I actually didint know there was a place that would do it for a fee.

Deffinetly take the rubber gaskets out.......Use the pre filter unless you have rejetted and it doesnt run lean without the pre filter

I dont think you need to clean it any more frequently than the OEM.  I usually clean it about as often as I grease the splines in the rear

I clean it myself.
Rinse opposite of the air flow let it dry , re oil and re install.

Happy trails

There should be no dirt on the side facing in.  A little cleaner spray on the top side where the oil is  and GENTLY trickle water from side to side so the dirt slides off in line with the folds.  If water is forced through the filter, then the filter is ruined

I always cleaned my own.  Very easy.  I have their recharger kits, but you can use most any soap and filter oil.  One kit will last many cleans.  Let it dry after a soapy cleaning, and again after oiling.  The directions are simple.

I used K&N filters years ago but just didn't notice any real world improvement or difference. The Valkyrie is a road bike, not a track racer by any stretch. I'd rather just replace the oem filter annually and be done with it.

YMMV,

I agree Mark.  Because I am lazy and don't like to pull the tank only to clean the filter.  Once 12-15 months have past, I feel better with an OE filter in there than a dried out K & N.  (I have one of each in two bikes)

I think it was CA that said the OEM filter is better than the K&N.

The K&N is less restrictive thereby allowing more particles to pass on thru into the motor.

I clean my own.  K & N recommends 40,000 miles, I believe.

I run without the pre-filter element.  I have TBR 6X6 pipes with original equipment carburetion.

I have run a K&N filter for about 220K miles with NO pre-filter.

MGM likes that extra fresh air in him at times the throttle is wide open.

Same here, no prefilter, and use the recharge kit to clean & oil my own.

OK, I have the six gun exhaust. No reason to pull the carbs to see if they have been jetted. Cause it runs like a champ.
As long as the filter has not dried out, it stops the fuzzies.  So, I will not worry about the foam prefilter.
The plugs were replaced but they had good color. So I do not think they are running rich or lean.

I appreciate all the answers. Guess I will pull the tank again and rejuvenate the filter next weekend.

I put together the bike since I needed to ride it to work last week.  Yep there it is, I HAVE to ride the bike to work. (aww, poor me, I know) We are down to just the car and the bike.  At least I have good raingear for when it is raining.

Oh to answer somebody about offers to charge the filter. Several of the quick lubes around Amarillo offered cleaning and re-oil of K&N filters. It may have been at a higher cost than what I could do it myself, but then I saved that time doing other things.
