Fuel filter ordered but have some related questions

The PO removed the in tank fuel filter and installed an external filter. I have ordered a new filter and a new fuel line hose to put it back to stock. While I have the tank off I will be changing the air filter, should I also replace / rebuild the “05 COVER SET,rooster   16953-MBZ-B51 (replaces 16953-MV9-000)  HDL cost of  $28.91” ? Does this part replace the diaphragm mechanism or do I have to pull the valve apart?...

Also,
I am considering installing the Dan Marc electric fuel valve at a later date, is there anything I should consider while I am putting the new screen and fuel line on?

Is this the correct air cleaner, “02 AIR CLEANER 17210-MZ0-000  HDL cost $17.35” AND is there any reason many of you order parts thru HDL versus the stealer? are the shipping (waiting) times similar to get the parts?

To generalize, usually the dealer charges more and gets parts faster.

I use HDL, tires usually show up in a few days, sometimes other parts seem like they
take a really long time... they've never left me holding the bag, if something's not right,
my experience is that they try to make it right...

If your tank is off, you can use the vacuum test at http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/petcock.htm
to ensure that your diaphragm is OK.

If your tank is on, it is a pretty safe bet that your diaphragm is OK if reserve works, and if
you run out of gas in a mile or so when you turn the petcock off.

If you rebuild your petcock with a cover set, I think it would be a real good idea to
run the vacuum test from the shoptalk article above before you put stuff back together...

There's a valve in the petcock that can go bad, I don't know the symtoms... if your diaphragm
seems good and your petcock seems bad, it is probably time to get a whole new petcock... ?

I havent checked the reserve position but I know the OFF position works..the fuel works when the bike is on, and shuts off the fuel when running in the off position, I guess it is safe to say that it is working fine.

I have been starting even though I had not been riding it, had fuel stabilizer in it and just rode 32 miles on Sunday and it all seemed fine. I ask about the diaphram part because I thought it might be something I want to do while I had the tank off. (and if it was that I had better order the part..)

(just to clarify) - I ran it the other day in the parking spot with the fuel shut off and it ran for a while but finally sputterd, turned it back on and ran fine. After that is when I did the 32 miles around town. Next I will check the reserve position of the switch

It seems like mabey I should leave the petcock alone since it does seem to be working, other than adding the filter screen back onto it.

The petcock can flow fuel in "RUN" and cut off in"OFF" and still have a bad reserve valve that will not flow fuel.
and the Dan Marc will require no special mods,,just get the proper fittings, and wire it up to a power source.  I put mine just before the "T" going to the two carb banks.

I kept my petcock oem as I just rebuilt it last year with the petcock 'cover set kit'.

The OEM petcock can fail in a number of ways. A pinhole in the diaphragm can allow a small amount of fuel to leak down the vacume line and cause a hydrolock. The ball valve which turns the fuel on, off and reserve can fail to seat properly and again allow a small leak to cause a hydrolck over time.
A leak which is too small to allow the engine to run can still cause a hydrolock over days of slow leaking.
If it's been several years since a petcock rebuild or if you don't know how long it may have been, the best choice is a rebuild, or a Pingle. Remember that you have to order the screen seperately, it is not included in the cover set.
