Hi folks, I asked a fella about what he meant by cutting off the 3 piggies on his original exhaust and this is the reply I got:

"At the end of each pipe there is three smaller outlet pipes/silencers. These have been nicknamed the three piggies or piglets. In America it is popular to saw these off so to make the bike louder"

Has anyone done this ? Any opinions on whether it would work or affect the bike in any way ?

Regards

QM

Quietman: Has anyone done this?

A lot of people have done it. And if that's not loud enough, people
take long drill bits and reach way down inside the holes left behind
by the piggies and drill out the baffles inside the canisters... I don't
know that it hurts or helps the performance, its just a way to adjust
the sound to individual preferences... my pipes were cut and drilled
when I got my bike, and my individual preference was to not ride the
bike until I found some quiet pipes  Grin ... if you do it, you'll have to
pick a new board-name...

Cheers Mike. Where would I cut if I was going to do it ? Would I cut out the inside ? Sorry but I'm used to different style of bike and just getting to know my F6.
If it's too loud I'll just change the name to "not so quiet"  Grin

There's a whole bunch of information you can search out of this board about the
piggies and the pipes in general, there's all kinds of variables... if you wear
a full face helmet and cut your pigs, there's an annoying resonance you might
get that might drive you crazy on long trips. There's a board sponsor (MarkT)
that modifies pipes a bunch of different ways. He can make it so that they are
loud when you want, quiet when you want, they can make more horsepower,
they can look different. Stock pipes look great, I think, but he has some really
cool ways to change the ends of the pipes.

Anywho... if you're new to Valkyries, my advice would be to ride it, and hang out
here a while to get a good idea of what you want before you jump the gun...

Had my Valk 3 years before I had enough of the quiet. Didn't want to ruin the exhaust so I cut the piggies off as a trial. I left stubs about an 1" to 1.5" long. Not as loud as cutting them flush but you can restore the pipes with something to weld to if wanted.
I like the new sound after 2 years. Louder would be OK but when I travel I ride 8-10 hour days and the noise would be to much. Short rides noise is good. I've read here that passengers get more noise than the operator something else to consider.

Cutting the piggies just deepens the tone without any real increase in volume, drilling the first baffles will bring up the volume some, but not enough to be too much for a long days ride (my opinion), and as a side note I found that it brings the noise level up just enough to quiet most of the 'didn't hear you coming' comments from the Hardley riders.

Quietman, Your bike is, if my memory serves me correctly, an F6C.  That means that the piggies are smaller diameter than we have on the Valkyries.  That probably makes little difference when cutting the piggies and going for more sound but I am thinking you might want to check out some other options before you cut up those rather high priced mufflers.

I managed to find a set of exhaust that had already been gutted and was able to purchase them for $100.  Now I can keep my original unaltered exhaust (over $1200 replacement cost) in case I decide to go back to it.  Just something you might want to think about.  Even used, unaltered original pipes are selling for over $300.  Altered pipes are cheap.

Cheers Bigwolf. Yeah mine is a German import F6C. Parts here are hard to come by, well at cheap money anyway. Aftermarket pipes are fierce expensive. My only option is to have the parts delivered to New Jersey and then shipped to Ireland from there probably taking 2 months minimum before I'd have my hands on them. Cheaper option at the minute would be to modify the oiginal equipment

Quietman.....

How loud do you want?  Cutting the piggies won't make it any louder.....just gives a deeper tone to the exhaust.

If you want louder, the next step is the drill the rear set of baffles after cutting the pigs.  If that's not loud enough, you can drill the front set of baffles, but you'll need to do some carb work if you mess with the front set.

If you drill the rear baffles and it's still not loud enough for you, you can take it to the next step and perform the "Ragnar cut"...............

http://luiscajiga.com/Exhaustm2.htm

Here's mine with the piggies cut and with the rear baffles drilled........

Honda Valkyrie - LED turn and tag light modificationspowered by Aeva

Here it is with the Ragnar cut done to it......

Honda Valkyrie - after Ragnar Cutpowered by Aeva

However.....and this is a pretty big HOWEVER.....like someone else already warned you about, once you cut the piggies, you'll start to experience a resonance drone.  If you only ever wear a half helmet (without a neck curtain) or ride without a windshield, it won't be a problem.....however, if you ride with a windshield and wear a 3/4 or a full helmet (anything that covers your ears), you WILL experience the drone.

The drone resonates inside your exhaust tips and can drive you crazy.

If you cut your piggies, I'd suggest that you leave enough of a stub so that you can repair them after you find out if the drone drives you crazy or not.

Personally (and after experiencing all of the above for myself), if you want loud, I'd leave your pipes stock and buy a set of Cobra pipes if you want loud (you can remove the baffles from the Cobras if you want....they won't drone)......or probably the better option, buy a set from MarkT.

Same here... mine are sans baffles. I find that with moderate acceleration the sound isn't obnoxious and so far the "Wow, that sounds awesome!" comments are outnumbering the "that's obnoxiously loud!" comments 100 to 0. At idle and low speed the rumble is intoxicating.

Make no mistake about it though... with unbaffled Cobras, go under an overpass and twist the throttle hard and there's no mistake about why it's called the Dragon.

When I ride long distances, I do use foam earplugs but that's really more for the wind noise than exhaust noise.

I'm not sure I would modify an expensive (and increasingly unavailable) stock exhaust. Personally I prefer a silent bike. I've been known to snap in the clutch as I pass a Harley so all he sees is this silent bike flash by at 120 mph. It's like my Valk is saying:  "I'm so awesome I blew by you without even making a sound. You should see what happens if I actually open the throttle."
