My 99 Valk C is a joy to ride. Mostly. It idles very smoothly. I can balance nickels and quarters on the right valve cover. It raps out quite smoothly, It even cruises smoothly.

But if I ask for a lot of power below 3,000 RPM, I can feel each engine pulse. It feels a bit like I imagine a Harley might feel. The power pulses are evenly spaced, no missing,  but I can feel each hit.  Above 3,000 RPM, I can firewall it and it's smooth. Below 3,000, not so much. It gets worse with slower  engine RPM, of course.

None of this stops me from lugging it, but I seem to remember it being much smoother at large throttle openings and low RPM. I have ran two tanks of Seafoam through it recently.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the low speed jets. No amount of cleaner will clean those unless you keep the RPMs below 3000 for a long period of time.

I alternate between Seafoam, Lucas and Techron.  If one leaves something, maybe the next one will dissolve it,,, and I agree with keeping the RPM's < 3K for an extended period.

Won't hurt to run some Seafoam, but if it's idling well and all, it's probably not your jets.

When was the last time you changed your air filter?

If it still idles smooth and your problem has been getting worse, it seems like you have got yourself a case of varnished low  jets.. You say you ran some Sea-foam thru it, but, how much and how did you run it ??  Why not empty the fuel tank and full with new fuel and a full can of Sea-foam, then run it 2500 rpm and below.. Run a few tanks of fuel with heavy doses of the Sea-foam at low rpms and see if that helps.. If it doesn't, it seems like you may have to get your hands dirty..
That is,, I'm assuming everything else, like vacuum lines, etc are OK..

While you are running around at 2500 rpm or less, apply the choke periodically for a short time.  Hoser

I can "lug" my Interstate down to 1000 rpm in 5th gear (25 mph) and just twist the throttle and go. It won't outrun traffic until it gets moving, but no jumps or fluttering or anything, just straight pull. You can feel the power pulses until your up in the rev's a little, but nothing to bother. Maybe your carbs need synced or something. I have 36,000 on my bike and have not had the carbs synced or valves adjusted. I run Seafoam first thing in the year, and just before I put it away for the winter. Store it with a full tank with a healthy dose of seafoam. YMMV cooldude

Yep, what Michvalk said.. And just make sure the Seafoam gets into the carburetors for awhile before storage..

Thanks for the tips guys, they will help a lot. I am not so sure I can keep the revs under 2,500 for very long, though. I just may have trouble with that!  cooldude

Varnish. My enemy.  Guess I need to ride the bike more!

I will also try an old trick I learned on my 75 wing. The idea is that you disconnect the gas line from the tank and feed the carbs Yamaha Carb Cleaner until the motor stalls. Let it sit five minutes, then hook up the gas and start it. It will belch black smoke for a while, but is likekly to help. If it needs another treatment, leave the carb cleaner in for 24 hours the second time.

This trick is courtesy of Randakk, the GL1000 guru, in his tech tips.
