i am wanting to install a interstate trunk on a standard. is there any parts that i would have to be swapped, or does the trunk mount just bolt up the same way the standard backrest does. and hopefully i will find a trunk without paying to much

If the trunk doesn't come with mounting hardware, you'll need the mounting rails, attachment hardware and so forth. Additionally, the Standard's fender rails need to be swapped for their I/S counterparts, each of which have a couple of 8mm studs welded to them. These are what actually holds the trunk on the bike.

Next is the matter of lighting: The I/S' trunk mounting rack - specifically, the matte black crossmember near the taillight - has a vertically-oriented hold-down for the I/S' rear seat tab. This hold-down MUST be clearanced or it'll gouge into said taillight. Further, you'll need to build and install a wiring harness if you're planning to use the I/S' trunk lights for run, stop or turn lighting.

It can be done...here's Blondie and her '99 Tourer shortly after I put the trunk from an '01 I/S on it. Changeover - including all mods, wiring, etc - was done in a weekend:

What Bagger said.  You need the trunk and it's mounting rack, then change the fender rails to the Interstate type.  The easiest part is splicing 3 wires into your bike's wiring loom for ground, tail light and brake.

I've done it a couple of times, it's not hard at all, once you get the parts together.

I've never had any clearance issues between the rack and the tail light, but you never know, I guess.  If you did, it would be an easy fix.

If you're lucky, you won't need paint, but don't be too choosey, good, complete trunks are getting harder to find

As long as you are adding a trunk, why not make it a removable one?  Bill has a great picture by picture 'how to' on his site.  Check it out here -

http://bigbf.com/bigbf_shop/mod_i-s_trunk/

This will also show you how to modify the trunk bracket, so it does not garf up the top of the Standard Tail Light.

You will need the I/S Rails, and if you are lucky, like I was, you can trade your Standard rails, for the trunk sellers I/S rails.  Lighting is pretty easy, and there are lots of folks here to lend a hand, or give advice.

My '97 Standard, after a lot of TLC  cooldude

After less than 5 minutes...  loosten 4 nuts, unplug the light harness, remove the back seat!

I did this mod in late 2000. Back then I got the trunk, rails, bracket, seat for $1000.  It's not hard to do. You need I/State fender rails, with all the brackets.  If you use the I/State seat, the rear tab of the seat might rub you tail lite.  You will need to replace your saddle bags hinges with the I/State  hook style. Simple replacement. I also went with the I/State shocks.  You will love the extra space for your whatevers.
