I ride a Standard with a NC windshield. There is not a good spot to mount a camera on this bike. I had it behind the wind shield on my Suzuki but the Valk has the gauges, the riser cap and the windshield hardware that blocks the view.  Roll Eyes
Can the riser cap be replaces with separate caps without changing the riser it self so the bar between is exposed? A Ram type mount could maybe work in that location if is long or high enough to eliminate the gauges from view.
I was thinking that maybe something home made to attack on the center bolt of the windshield might be the ticket.  cooldude

Any ideas or some pictures of how you overcame this problem would be great. I did look at some old posts and so far the camera on the helmet was best IMO but I would really like to get this thing behind the windshield. I have both the Drift & Go Pro camera's and I'm pretty sure I'll be using the Drift for the most part.

I bought the Go Pro with extra mounting kit.

I still havent decided if I'll mount it on my helmet, not good looking but I like being able to take pictures of the country I'm riding through and also the tilt of the bike in the video frame looks more real and gives a better perspective of the angle of the turn.

Rather than mount it rigid to the bike, tilting with the turns and only taking pictures of the road ahead.

With the extra mounts, I figure I can afford to try it different places (just bought some RAM mounts also for the radio control) and not worry about recovering the mounts.

The mount I made for my Olympus still/video camera.  From this position I can shoot behind me, forward, turned towards me or my passenger to include the road behind her.  Going to use it to film my 92 y.o. mother when I take her for a ride Mother's Day.  Not on the Valk, on the Wing.  Notice it bolts to the clutch reservoir bolts and uses a standard tripod head.  It's made of 1/2" steel box tubing with a screw welded on the top to secure the tripod.  I leveled the bike then used a degree finder and spirit levels to tack it vertical before doing the final weld.

I have tried the GoPro Suction cup mount and it seems quite sturdy.  This last week I mounted it on the side of Tourer saddlebag to film rider behind me.  I also attached with mounts to handlebar behind windshield and want to try it on front of windshield with suction mount.  I did attach a short line to bag rails in case it came off but not necessary.

Here is review of GoPro and Ram suction mounts.

Yes they can be replaced, honda part 53131-mm8-000  for reference 2005 vtx1300s and several dozen others.  11.32 each at directline and others.

I have a ram mount as you describe, I can snap a photo later if you like.  I will also upload a video taken from that position later- as she who must be obeyed has something for me to do.

The long ram arm puts the camera almost touching the windscreen.
And some interesting lower mounts.

Ram Mount's U bolt clamp can be installed on the left handlebar. Then using a long arm (5" or 7") the camera can reach outboard of the windshield for unobstructed shots.

This is some great info.!!
Yes I would luv to see it installed and the riser caps is the way I'd most likely go.
All I'd need to do is peel off the NC sticker of the windshield.

If anyone is looking for a more affordable and compact camera. I have this Veho Atom 004 Muvi camera, it is only 1 1/2" tall and does a good job.  The unit comes with different mounts.  They also have other cams and accessories for these units.  This company is out of UK and makes good products, I have a few of them.  There is also a China crap knock off and the unit and quality is crap.  Veho is good quality items.  Mine is mounted on my mountain bike right now, my digital camera battery was dying so pic is not sharp.

This is the web page.

Don't vapor lock on their prices, I think it is in Sterling.  I bought mine at B&H Photo and the prices are reasonable.

Here's the contour style camera on the center ram mount with the long extension.  I found that the camera must be as close to the windscreen as possible to reduce glare back.

Here are the mounts on the crash bar.

Videos will be another day as the junky app that came with the camera isn't uploading.

Beauty!  cooldude

I stopped at a GPS place today and that is the mount they recommended. There are various lengths from 5.5"s to 1.5" I believe. The one you have looks like the 5.5" The u-bolt is a bit of an eye sore but is cheap and works well.

With that length I wonder about vibration but when you post your vid that should answer that for me.

I have one of the China copies. It works well and the audio is great. Problem I have with is it's communication with the computer. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. Unlike the one you have, mine has no view finder and your function indicators are these tiny little lights that are impossible to see while you ride. I am hoping I will be satisfied with the Drift ............ if not I'll open the Go Pro and sell the Drift.

I got a new handlebar mount off eBay recently and wish I hadn't bothered. It looked great and mounted easily, the camera fitted fine but the shaft between the camera and mount was too flexible. For more details and photos  http://fotos-espana.com/?p=215 I have now gone back to the $2 eBay mount and that is nice and rigid.

Man, it seemed the new clamp just had too much play in every direction almost like it wasn't secure enough on the riser.

Good eye.  That is a 6".  If your in Cowtown, GPScity is the place to go, that's where I picked up all my stuff the last time I was there.  Great prices for pick-up.

My Sony vegas crapped out and when I reloaded it, it turns out I can't remember how to use it Cheesy.

Ok here comes some of my craptacular videos.  Turn down the sound as these are raw and unedited.  Not very long and not great resolutions.

First video is going to be behind the windscreen in traffic.  1280x720 29.97fps and the camera is just a bit too far away from the windscreen.  I didn't scrape off all the dead bugs either.
windsheildcity.MOVpowered by Aeva

Next up is on the highway, typical windy prairie day.  I spin the camera so you can get a view without the windsheild.
windsheildandback.MOVpowered by Aeva

This video shows the view from the engine guard looking rearward.  This I'd like to see on Smokinjoe-VRCCDS#0005 bike. Actually watch this to the end, its funny. 848x480 59.99 fps
enigneguardrear.MOVpowered by Aeva

The last one is from my standard helmet mount on the highway. 1920x1080 29.97fps
helmetmount.MOVpowered by Aeva

The ram mount behind the windshield is very stable and has little vibration.  While riding I don't notice the helmet shake or buffeting but it is there.

I've got more crappy videos here http://contour.com/users/chrise2469 and on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/chrise2469/videos

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the video posts, I was wondering if mounting to the helmet would show shacking. You almost don't see any when mounted to the bike.

I used the Go Pro suction cup mount on top of my headlight and behind the windshield. I wasn't real happy with the location, and will probably try something different.

"chrise2469", did the camera survive?!! 2funny

Thanks for posting all of this it is a real help!
GPS City is where I was at ........... I drive by there almost everyday. They have most of the mounting options in stock as well. They come as complete kits but they suggested I bring the bike down and build a mount that would be suitable.
