Author Topic: Has Anyone Installed HyperLites  (Read 1857 times)

I was wondering if anyone had installed the HyperLites on the rear of their Valk.  I'm considering purchasing them to give greater visibility of my intention to stop!  They have a mount to place them on the license plate bracket but I want to know where I can connect to the bike wiring in the best location.

This is the website for HyperLites:  http://hyperlites.com/stdsf.html

I have them on my bike and my wifes trike. Love them. They just tie in with your brake light and rear turn signal right at the brake light. Put them on her Yamaha when she had it also. Easy to wire up.

Same here, good stuff. Mine are mounted underneath my trunk.

Hyperlites mounted under the trunk for three years now. Work perfect no problems. Think they are great.

I used 1/2" aluminum angle cut to the length of the hyperlites. Mounted the angle to the bottom of the trunk rack using the small bolts already there, where the horizontal and vertical rack parts meet right next to the helmet locks. Used 3M body tape to mount the top and back of the hyperlites to this angle (drilled small holes in the back of each angle for the wires to pass). Ran the wires up into the trunk and tied into the lights in the trunk.

Followed behind den-ace-T (BC-VRCC) to the annual Annacortes Oyster run, and my fellow rider and myself will be adding them to our bikes this spring.

Only decision now is what style to buy? But will get the 16 LED version.

He had them mounted on the turn signals, just above the license plate, of his IS.

We also have a head light modulator.

I mounted mine on my '99 standard in place of the red reflectors...used the holes on the bracket to run the wires through.  I have the 16 light option.

I bought them when my bike was new...sometime during 2000.  Had a bank of LEDs go out sometime in 2008, called the manufacturer and they sent new ones to me free of charge.  It's obviously a stand up company to back their product so long after original purchase.  They just wanted me to send the old ones back after they were removed so they could identify why they failed.

Good luck, it's a great product.

Are the Dual lights (brake and tail) better than the three way? Cause with the 3 way you get 8 red and 8 amber in each light where in the dual you get 16 red in each light. Thanks

jrhorton,
I have a 2000 standard, so the bike wiring is probably identical.  Where did you connect the Hyperlite wiring to the bike wiring?

I connected everything under the taillight housing.  This required drilling a small hole through the fender under the taillight housing to run the wires, then I touched up the hole with paint and sealed the wiring with silicone.  The flasher module and all the wiring fit nicely under the rubber pad for the taillight housing.  It's been this way for 12 years now and there was no corrosion or leaks through the fender and the wiring/flasher is protected from the elements.

I removed the turn signal assembly for the install to route the wires and tap into the brake light.  The manufacturer changed the wiring connectors from the dielectric filled crimp connectors on my original kit to the posi-taps in the new kit.  Wiring was greatly simplified from the original.  This should help you.

jr,
I am only installing the brake light flashers.  So I assume all my wiring will be under/within the rear brake light housing...right?
I plan to mount the LEDs on the mounting bracket they supply that fits behind the license plate. Probably I'll still have to drill a hole to get the wiring behind the brake light assembly.

i find 'em distracting, you have to really look for the turn signal if you're following someone with 'em to see if they're going to turn or just stopping.

Yes, but you have to route the wires from where the LEDs are mounted to the brake light wiring.  The cleanest method, without having wires exposed on the top of the fender from the taillight assembly to the turn signal assembly, was to remove the turn signals to route the wires through the fender, then back up through the fender under the taillight housing where all the connections are made.  This also minimizes the length of wiring exposed under the fender and protects the flasher module from the elements.

If showing the wires is not a big deal, then you can disregard the above advice.  Where my hyperlights are mounted there would be 3 or 4 inches of wires running between brake light housing and turn signal assembly.  I didn't want to have them where they were obvious or could get snagged when cleaning, etc..  These wires are small gauge (guessing 22 ga) and fragile.

PM me your email address and I'll take a few pictures and send them via email (will save re-sizing).

My email address is on my profile summary.  I'd be appreciative of pictures and will be watching for them.

Biker Bill, I re-sent some better photos after the caffeine wore off!!!  These should not have all the fuzziness of the originals.  Let me know if you need any more info...

I have had the Hyper lights on my Valk. I.S. for about 9 years. In that time I have gone through 1 new set, because the module stopped working. Rivco installed a new set. (they do not sell them anymore) and Just today after reading your post. Some of my L E D's are out and I figured I was about to spend the $100 to by them. Just got off the phone with Hyperlights and they are sending me a new set. No questions just address. Great guy, and talked awhile about Chicago roads and
 I 80.

Good Luck and I recommend them.  cooldude
