I just got back from a 1750 mile, 3 day ride.  We transported bikes from Virginia to Rapid City, SD, then rode back.  I noticed that riding hard across SD and Iowa that I was only getting 28 MPG (or so).  My engine is completely stock, and I usually get around 40 MPG on day rides.  This was my first long trip like this, and I didn't know if this was normal, or is there an issue.  Just to clarify "hard riding"= 80-85MPH (and up), and it was EXTREMELY windy for most of the trip...

Thanks!!!

Above 3k RPM, the main jets start to weep in and MPG falls sharply. Your MPG is not uncommon at that speed and headwind

Agree, your mileage sounds pretty normal at that speed.  The faster you go, the faster she drinks.

Thanks, guys!  I figured everything was okay, just wasn't expecting the mileage to drop that much...

Normal, especially if you had any kind of head wind.

Normal. If you run far at 120+, you'll see 15-16 mpg!!!! Lips Sealed

Sounds right at those speeds with wind! I juph st did 1400 miles with a 125 pd passenger and at 3 grand on the tach got 39 to 41 MPG at 80 MPH i got between 30 and 34 depending on the winds. was please with the 40 MPG with two of us , i have a 6 degree trigger, Dyna Jet set on 3, polished intakes and straight 4 in pipes with the collecter in and a K&N filter , i run mid grade with Rotella syn oil, works great for me!
