Perhaps previous owner did not use the correct coolant. I belive silicate free is what you lok for. I just buy the honda stuff. There are a whole bunch of posts on coolant manufactures and brands that are compatable with your bike. Use the search. Post up a picture too if you can, I might be wrong.

It's hard to tell if what we're seeing is rust or scale, or a combination. I see some places where the metal looks clean, as it might  if a piece of scale broke off.
If it's scale it might clean up with a wire brush and some scrapeing.

In Canada we have a product called CLR. Supposedly good for rust and scale (I don't have either in our water here), and I would try that or a simular product. Looks like scale to me, like mentioned, that clean spot makes it look like something feel off.

Looks to have been sitting for a long period of time.  Before or after!

Sure has been no maintenance since new. That's for sure.

From what little I know it looks like scale like a few others said. Its hard to tell.  Are you going to replace or try to clean? I am intrested in the outcome if you go the CLR route.

been spraying it with CLR every so often today and using an old toothbrush. will take pictures, appears to me that it's becoming more clean.
i don't think this makes a lick of difference for functionality, but it makes me feel better it's more clean

If it is scale and the CLR is working, I wonder what the rest of the system is looking like? The thermostat, etc.

You are more than likely lucky the deposits on the impeller are the kind that clog radiators and I believe that it is from anti freeze. The impeller on the water pump does cavitate and this allows air bubbles and deposits to form.

I think I would start with the thermostat, but being a different metal, maybe it did nothing, like look at the block, it is the impellar only that has the scale. Looks like aluminum is not affected.

I think I would almost remove the rad, plug the bottom, and fill with CLR (and distilled water) and let sit over night, then pour out into a basin and inspect.

did you not read from the clr site?

quote:" Can I use CLR to clean out my radiator?

No, CLR should not be used on a car radiator for two reasons. First, CLR may not be compatible with the internal metals of the radiator. Second, it could have adverse effects if the CLR is not rinsed out completely."

 ???

car rads and ours are built the same.
