I only have about 19k mi on my 03 std and my riding has been pretty limited. Last year however I did a 5k mi trip and I'm looking at another one this yr. Are there any lurking gremlins on this bike I should look into at this point before I hit the road? My routine maint is up to date ... fluids & filter changes, valve clearances, brakes. The only problems I've experienced in the past have been a leaky fork seal & fuel pump issue on belly tank. Thanks

1 of the most important things i did, late in the mileage though, was to lower the highway pegs. wished i had done it at 20k.  Grin
also, dont forget, if you are in need of a new tire, the CT tire is the way to go.
there i said it and i am not sory.
dont forget the air filter. on my 3rd one at 93k.
have a safe ride. cooldude

i think i've got everything you guys mentioned covered except splines & o rings. I'll be close to needing new tires at the end of my ride. Would you take the time to lube the splines now or OK to wait another 5k? Opinions are appreciated ...

How long since?  If more than 8,000 then go ahead and do it before.

If you haven't done them, and I didn't see them in your list of things you've done, I'd pull the rear and check the splines.  When did you change the tire last and were the splines lubed?  Are you sure you have 5k left on the tires?

Enjoy the ride!

I did not notice any mention of splines, rear end removal in your list of things either. I would pull it and check em out. I have noticed that tires seem to go much faster than you'd think on those last few millimeters of tread..so be sure they are up to the trip.

If you want a hand with checking it out, bring it up here to Moses Lake, and I'll help you dig into it. I also have a tire changer, if you'd like to replace before the trip.

While your checking your splines go ahead and check the pinion cup and driveshaft too, as these will run dry and leave you on the side of the road. Very easy to do while you have the tire off and don't forget to leave the four bolts alittle loose until you have tighten your axle nut. I have 148 thousand miles on my lady and her final drive is fine but I did strip out a pinion cup once.

thanks for all the responses. i've got about 9k mi on my Avons and they still have lots of tread above the wear indicators so they should be ok. I doubt the shop I used to install the Avons lubed anything so I'm going to take all your advice and pull the rear and lube the splines. I found a couple of write-ups on the Shop Talk page for this but nothing for the driveline & pinion cup. Looks like there are some threads on this so i can do some more searching but if anyone has a write-up or link to the driveline and pinion servicing that would be great.

Thanks for the offer Olddog, last time I was in Moses Lake was to get my belly tank. This work all looks pretty straightforward so I'm going to give it a go. I may yell if I run into trouble. Thanks again everyone, what did we do before forums??

I ran Avons on the rear before I went Darkside and 10K was the BEST I ever got out.  So, take a close look at that tire.  I don't ride aggressively but I know I couldn't get 14K out of one.  Front tire - I think you're about right.  But not the rear.  IMHO.

Yeah, as from another thread:

Lubricate the levers, both of them.
