I noticed that my vacline ont the rightside center carb is collasped and the left center carb line is crack.  It looks like I need to remove the air box.  How do I disconect the intakes at the air box?   Is there anything else i should look for?   What size vac line should I get? Any tips to make it goes easier would be much appreciated. Sad

Chris you are right they are 2 little hose but they each connect at the same T fitting and it did not look like I could reach in there and remove or reconnect easily.  Believe me if I dont need to touch the air box that will be ok.  Also i noticed that the rightside hose is missing the little clamp at the intake. You know the ones that look like they don't do much anyway. Do I need to get one or will a friction fit be ok?

look in shop talk, it will describe the string method.  If you go buy 5/32 ID fuel line it will fit tight enough so you wont need clamps.

Works best if you remove the fuel selector knob (secret screw) so you can unbolt both ends of the tank and rock it to the right so the tops of the left carb bank is exposed.  Tie a long piece of strong string to the end of each of those vacuum tubes after you pop them off their intakes.  Then reach in over the carb bank with a hook make from a coat hanger and grab that T fitting and pull it out over the carbs.  once you have the T fitting out you can replace the hoses.  Leave the strings setting in the trac where the vacuum lines will go, retie the ends to the new lines and pull them back in place.

You can, but should not remove the rubber air tubes, the ones that connect the air box to the carburetors.

Loosen the clamps that fix the rubber air tube tightly to the carburetors.

Pull the air box out completely with the tubes all connected. It's very easy to do.

About reinstalling the air box, well, I know there are many who have trouble with this but I don't see the problem.

The air box is very easy to reinstall properly.

Akin to an old wives tale!

always in my saddlebag.

if it were mine. i would take the airbox off, fix ALL the vac lines.

if you have one cracked, i'll bet there are others.

box isn't that hard to put back on. just put in one side, then the other.

also, buy the "heavy" walled vac line. it'll last a lot longer.

Thanks everyone just finished up doing it the way Chris suggested, with the strings and coat hanger. It worked great and she is back to her old self. It took a little longer because  I had a full tank and when I went to siphon it out I got a mouth full of gas and even swallowed some.  Man the taste of gas sucks big time.  Wife got all nervous and called poision control.  They said I should be fine as long as I did not get any in my lungs.  I keep burping up gas.  I wanted to breathe on a match  to see if it would flame up, but the wife keeps freaking out.  Anyways thanks for the quick input.  Mike cooldude

Never-never-never syphon gas by mouth.  A couple of drops (or so I'm told, and won't test it) in your lungs will kill you dead.
