I noticed Chenaynay was shaking her ass when I'd jump on her hard, and my p205/60r16 yokahama was rubbing on the swingarm.  So yesterday before our Rogue Ride/shopping trip, I jacked her up and gave the rear wheel a shake.  Sure enough there was some play in the bearings so tonight I pulled the rear and am doing the double bearing mod.  How many have done this without using the nilos ring?

Here some pics, splines show some wear but are still serviceable

Sidewall rubbing on swingarm.  The major gouges were in this tire when it was given to me, the givee didn't do the nut cage mode and didn't like the darkside, I wonder why?

How many of you are cheap bastards like me and will put this tire back on?

Gary's (RIP) bushings with 11,000 miles on them, didn't pull the plate, they have some movement to them, but aren't destroyed like those in the earlier post.

It is a thin metal cover (like a washer) that you install to help keep dirt & water from getting in the bearing since you eliminate the seal used with the single row bearing.

Type Nilos rings in google, you'll see.

10,000 miles after doing the article I pulled the wheel for driveline maintenance. There was no wear on the outside of the bearing.

Those splines look exactly like mine did when I had that bearing go belly up. What really surprised me was how quickly that wear showed up. I'd had the rear apart for drive line maintenance about 2000 miles earlier and every thing looked like new.
And yes, I'd probably put that tire back on or maybe not, lol.

Doesn't take many miles (bearing failure or alignment/4 nuts thing).

Lots of folks think it's all about the grease. The truth is if a bearing is failing or the pumpkin is not aligned, the grease is pretty much irrelevant.

Glad ya caught it!

I did the rear bearing mod but now i'm curious ..what is the  nilos ring?

Some info on the Nilos Ring

Below is a bearing on the left as standard and on the right with a Nilos sitting on top of it.

Here is how it is installed. It's probably not necessary because the bearing is sealed but it provides an added degree of protection for the bearing seal in the absence of the lip seal that is lost for the "double bearing mod."

It's not needed but for a couple bucks it is peace of mind.

Cool. Loss of the seal is the main reason I've haven't considered doing the mod.

If you use a bearing cover (Nilos) then you need to cut the spacer down the correct thickness, or it will all be too wide to put back together.
