Guys, there is a lot of this going on...

What can we do to protect ourselves?

I always get off the gas, cover the brakes, and "wag" my headlights at them.  I had a guy stop short after a 2' pull out just last week, and gave me the thumbs up and apologetic wave as I rode by.  I took that to mean that my "wag" at him got his attention.  I had him covered anyway, and he would have had a TOUGH time getting me if he had tried... but still.

It's REALLY up to us out there.  Bitching about the cagers isn't going to keep us alive.

Let's share some techniques amongst ourselves and see if we can get this number down.

I'm with Joe on this.  I'm scared I'm going to confuse somebody with the "wag" into pulling out in front of me.  That's why I got my modulator.

Oh and by the way...It doesn't bother me seeing drivers talking on the phone.  At least while they are talking, you know they're not texting anybody.

Don't confuse 'wag' with 'wig-wag' (an actual device for making vehicle headlights alternately flash)
Wag, as used here, refers to slightly and momentarily re-aiming your headlight toward a driver, done with just a slight dip/turn/wiggle/whatever.

Flashing your brights is, well... just flashing the brights.

ps:  I flashed my brights at cars pulled up on side streets ahead of me only a few times before one of them took it to mean, "by all means, go ahead and pull out".  Now I just flip it to bright and leave it while visibly turning my head to stare at their face.

I drive an interstate with lower driving lights wired to run with the low beams. I also have a headlight  modulator that works either the high or low beams. I think the modulator is a good thing, I know it can be a pain in traffic or on a ride with other bikes but mine can be manually overridden very easily by cycling the hi/low button. I ride 50 miles a day roundtrip to work and back on some very heavily traveled roads so I need all the help I can get.

I ride with high beams on during the day.  All the time.

A "wag" is wiggling the handlebars enough to create noticeable movement in the headlight, and have it be DIFFERENT from what they were previously ignoring.

Say a 18" swerve withing my lane, to create noticeable side to side movement, and a VERY distinctive, attention getting change in the light profile from my scoot.

Had a bad accident a couple years ago when a gal pulled out in front of me. I added additional lights & a headlight modulator. It does help, I've had people start to pull out but do a double take & stop. I had a couple people pull to the side to let me by, had one guy jump out at a light to tell me my light was blinking. Yep! Thanks for noticing! I still assume cagers don't see me & try to be prepared.

Ha! That reminded me, I have a headlight modulator and a flashing-to-solid led brake light. Had a guy come running up to me yelling,"All your lights are blinking! All your lights are blinking!" Told him thanks for noticing. Grin
