Ids this thing a 440 or 412??
Its adjusted by twisting the top.
It has no provisions for a spanner wrench.
Im not sure at this point and Id like to trade them for a set of OEM shocks.

If no provision for a spanner wrench then it's definitely not a 412.

As I recall, the 440's do adjust by twisting the top. A set I had were that way and I had to go buy one of those rubber strap wrenches to adjust it. I thought it a real PITA in that department.

I did look at the current shocks on the Progressive site.
Seeing as this is an older shock I supplied a picture and asked a simple question.

For those who have trouble reading.
The question was:  what model is this shock??

No lessons in search is needed.

Alright let's make this VERY simple for you.  John told you 412s require a spanner to adjust.  When you look at the picture of a 412 Progressive's site, that I linked to, you will see notches in the bottom of the shock for a spanner.  When you look at a picture of a 440 on Progressive's website, again I provided you a link, you will see no notches for using a spanner.  John remarked about this also.  Additionally, the shock you posted a picture of matches that of the picture of a 440 Progressive posted on their site; therefore, if we use our powers of observation and deductive reasoning, the picture you posted is of a 440.

Thank you Marty.
Thats more of an answer that Id have expected.
Then just look here.
I did look as I have said.
For all I know at one time Progressive may have had a 439 series and my shock being as old as it is may have had a different model number.
Id like to contact Progressive and see if its life time warrenty might still apply.
Ive had the shock apart and the piston isnt any where near as stiff as I would expect a gas filled shock to be.
The spring on the other hand is very stiff.

This bike was very missued in its youth.
I bought it as a non runner with the intent to rebuild it as a future trike project.
I have or had absolutly no knowledge before hand about Valkyries.
I was in need of a challenge.
It had sat unsed for almost 2 years outside in Tampas heat and humidity and yes was very rusty in alot of places.
The shocks are the last thing I need to take care of.
It took me a little over 7 months to rebuild the bike.
I paid $2800 for the bike and maybe another 2K in parts to resurect it.
Its actually a very good running bike now sans some more cosmetic work.

1.  The idea was for you to look, figure it out and learn.
2.  Afaik, Progressive's lifetime warranty on the 440s is not transferable.
3.  The 440 comes in standard and heavy duty versions.  The weight rating is stamped on the spring.  I don't have 440s on either of my Valks.  My Tourer has I/S shocks and my I/S has Progressive 416s.

That's a pretty rare set of Hardchrome pipes in the first picture even if they are coated black.

Thanks
Yes it is.
The 1st pics how I bought it the day I trailered it home.
Non running.
The second pics is how Im presently riding it.
7 months work so far for me.
Complete engine rebuild and everything from the forks back to the new rear tire.
New parts when I could get them.
Otherwise used.
Its pretty much done for now.
Not very pretty yet but fully functional.
Ive put 1K miles on it so far.
Nothings fallen off or busted yet.
I eventually will put it in storage. Till the market improves and then trike it.
Paint too of course.

The last thing Id like to do is try a set of OEM shocks.
The bike rides well just for me very stiff.
I knew nothing zero of a Valk before buying this bike.
My backgrounds 100% V-Twins.
But a motor is a motor.
Get ones self an OEM manual and get at it.

Maybe thats why my questions here have been so basic.
Stupid little things you cant get from a book for bike thats been out of print for 10 years.
You have to ask the guys who own them.
And for me thats been here......................

Marty stamped on the spring says
03-1318
140/200

Which means nothing to me.
As far as the warrenty.
I know they say lifetime to the original owner.
But
Ive found alot of companies with their higher end products do stand behind them even if your not the original buyer.
Since most folks dont have reciepts etc 10 years later.
So it never hurts to try sometimes to email and ask.

I traded them for a near new set of take off OEMs.
I knew what I had there.
The guy I bought the tank from wanted them.
I wanted a new set of take off OEMs.
We just did an even trade, mine for his.
He has since had them powder coated and is happy as heck.
As am I with the OEM pipes.

Cross referencing Progressive's tech sheet with the numbers you supplied indicates you have model 440-4221 HD 13" shocks.  If Progressive will provide warranty service on them and replace the springs due to the rust, you might ask them to install standard rate springs.

Good job on the rescue...hate to see these bikes parted out on sites like Pinwall.

As far as the lifetime warranty on 440 shocks, Progressive's warranty is very good as long as you have the original sales receipt.  If the previous owner gave you a stack of papers and you have the receipt they will probably send you a new set.

I've made sure to put mine in the safe along with my most important papers..

Good luck and enjoy...you deserve a frosty beverage!!

Nah no paperwork for the shocks.
Ive seen companies do some strange stuff when your actually willing to pay to have it done.
I might just send them off to be refurbished and maybe use them maybe sell them who knows??
I dont tend to sell parts. Never know when you will need a spare.
I might even need them with the trike kit???
I dont think so but maybe.
This is the company I intend to use.
A friend did up his R* with them and its terrific.
Not run of the mill by any means.
