Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.

Apple Valley, MN

« on: May 06, 2012, 11:55:25 AM »

Hi all!
I have been lurking around here for a month or so after purchasing my Valkyrie. I found this site to be a treasure trove of information and guidance.
A little about me: I am in a semi-retirement mode living in Minnesota. Yes, like my handle suggests, I am a former BMW rider (83 R80ST, 95 R1100RS and 00 R1100RT) who enjoyed Long Distance Riding and organized LD Rally's (IBA# 5819). I haven't participated in an organized rally event since 05 or so. The Valkyrie suits my current riding style.
My infatuation with the Valkyrie goes back to 98 or 99. While on a road trip to SoCal, I spotted this big old red and white two wheeled thing motoring north on I-5 between SD and LA; somewhere near Oceanside. I had no idea as to what it was but was love at first sight!
We traveled along side it for quite some time so I had plenty of opportunity to soak in the sight and sound of this beautiful and unique machine. It was then I said to myself: "...someday".
Well, someday came a couple of months ago after I placed a "wanted" ad on Craigslist. I got a few responses from dealers and one from a young man who said he had one stored in a barn (yes, the old found-in-a-barn story) for, as far as he knew, over 5 years. It was his Dad's who became disabled and couldn't ride anymore and it was time to move it out of the barn. He admitted that it was pretty rough and not running. I went to look at it after frantically researching "no-start" problems on the internet. Everything pointed to the carbs so I decided to take the gamble and we agreed on a price. Because it wasn't running and over 100 miles from me (I don't have a trailer), I had a local dealer, who has a great reputation, pick it up and rebuild the carbs for me as well as hydraulic fluid change, install new tires (which came with the bike) air filter, rear spline lube and carb sync. Besides some spit and polish, that's all she needed to start purring again.
Once I got her home I did some tweaking and de-farkling (a BMW term  Roll Eyes) to make her mine and if you follow the link you will see the result. The only things I have left to do is scrub and polish the wheels (they are pretty ratty), reinstall the tank badges and wire for a GPS.
I expect to spend a few days at InZane and I am looking forward to meeting everyone and hope to ride with you guys and gals.

Thanks and enjoy the photo's...it's a 98 Standard with 11,700 miles

Welcome aboard, Joe.  Looking forward to seeing you at Inzane this summer.

By the way, our Minnesota state rep lives in Apple Valley also.  Hopefully, you will get to meet T.P. and his wife Nancy soon.  Great folks.

Bike looks pretty sharp.  I think you got a great deal.

Outstanding.  The 98 Blue/Creme Std is one of the alltime favorites. Was my first Valk, bought it new, and started a whole legacy of events.  Not just for me , but it affected many lives in a totally unbelieveable way.  My Son has it now, and I just wish it looked half as good as yours.  Welcome to the Club, there is none better.

Mike: She weighs a good 150lbs lighter.
I took off the sissy bar and rack, the light bar, pillion, windshield and brackets, turn signal grills and hoods, saddle bags and mounting brackets, and the chrome radiator cap.
Its much cleaner now and really shows off the lines.

Thanks!

I can really identify with your love at first sight; I saw a guy on an Interstate on the way to Laconia, and thought it was the most beautiful bike I'd ever seen. Back in the early 70's, I had an R26.  had a drunk tell me outside a bar "Hey, that thing is only running one one cylinder!" Welcome, won't make Inzane this year, or next, but who knows what'll happen?
