Electrical - not valk related, however, I did---

just finish doing the maintenance on the turn signal switch this weekend. That involved shorting out a horn wire, and blowing two fuses. All is well the switch now works.
Now this problem:
1. 1992 Mercury Grand Maquis (work car - 26mg. hwy.)
2. Driver side window control switch for the driver window stopped working. - window will not go up or down.
3. Passenger window, rear windows (left and right) work
4. Window "lock switch" does not work (will not lock any window from going up and down)
I assume the window "lock switch" sends power to the other window switches to either allow them to go up or down.
Each window switch has four wires going to the switch - two wires at the front of the switch and two wires at the back of the switch. I didn't go deep enought to see if I could pull each wire out of the switch one at a time.
I was wondering if I could use a jumper wire to connect the two wires at the front of the switch and then push the window switch forward and see if the window goes either up or down.
All wires are connected to one main switch block in the drivers armrest.
the other possibility is that the window motor is not working.

Any other hints to trouble shoot this will be appreciated.

I don't know your car at all, but my first inclination would be to go to my local self-serve auto wrecker and find a switch. Your car is at the right age that there should be plenty to choose from at a big yard. There certainly are of my '96 Saturn, for which I easily found a $5 power door lock switch to replace the broken one on my driver's door.

Keep the car engine off and ignition on and operate the window switch while listening to the window and watching the interior light. You want to look for a dimming of the light when you operate the switch if it does this of course with the window not moving then its the motor. Make sure it dims in both directions not just one, if one and its up then it might be the switch. The switch is wired so that on most occasions the whole switch is from one power source so if the other windows operate then you have power. Since its the drivers door look for the wires that go to that motor pretty easy to do. Power them if the window works you know its the switch. If memory serves it more than likely will be a yellow and red wires. Listen to hear any noise when operating the window like the motor turning and not moving anything, it will be faint but there you may even have to put your ear to the door. Ford has in their window motors 3 plastic pucks that either deteriorate or break over time. So the motor will spin but it wont connect with the gear to move the window regulator. They cost all of 5 dollars and are also easy to replace. I would urge you before replacing anything that you remove the door panel and find the motor wires and see if indeed the motor is bad. I have seen more motor pucks bad than either switches or motors themselves. Sometimes just by removing the switch you can find the wires and power them.

Robert - it's doing exactly what you said. I had a feeling the motor was bad with the other windows working. I was hoping for the path of least resistance (the switch). Next project will be to pull the door panel and search out the motor.
I'm a bit confused on the "pucks" - are they inside the motor itself? on the lift mechinisum?
