2000 Interstate, 2009 Stratoliner (2007 ZX14 sold)

Southwest Florida

« on: May 07, 2012, 06:54:34 AM »

First, I have owned the bike for only two weeks now. It came to me with a HUGE Show Chrome clear shield that is over my head. It provides great wind protection and I would use it on a long trip for sure. I picked up a dark smoke 8.5" used, (probably Cee Bailey) screen that looks awesome for my daily riding in town, but since it is below my chin...  If I ride without my full face helmet or any helmet I get too much wind, buffeting, cant hear the radio, etc...  I am trying to decide between the stock height and the 2" lower than stock height. I am about 5-10. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought my Interstate with a nine inch shorty on it.  It looked great but the wind buffeting was horrendous.  I like to look comfortably over the windshield so I opted for a Cee Baileys smoked windshield two inches shorter than stock.  Perfect.

Cool, I was thinking the 2" shorter one. I did think about cutting down a larger one because they are also wider than stock.  Can you hear the radio OK with it?

I'm not a radio guy.  Usually talking to my other half on the bluetooth intercom.  Like to be in touch with my surroundings too  Besides, that Valk motor is so soothing Smiley

P.S. sorry the short windshield did not work out.

I can't hear well to start with but works as well as the oem shield if not better. I only cut it down so that I could see over the top of the shield. Great wind coverage running down the supper slab. Smiley

Looks like you cut yours right where I was thinking it would be good, (the top of the sholders) where it goes up again, right?

I have a stock OEM windshield height never cut down, completely stock and I am also 5'10" with inseam of 30" probably what you are to within an inch at most.  I find the stock OEM windshield whatever that height is to be perfect for wind protection yet allowing me if need be to see above the windshield on those foggy nights or rainy days.  If I lift my head up say 1/2" to 1", I get a lot of wind buffeting top of my helmet that I do not like.  So, go stock OEM height whatever that is on the I/S.

I went with a smoked Clearview 2" shorter so I could see over all the time, but I'm 6'.
This is perfect for me & I really like the Clearview.

Peace, Whiskey.

I'm 5'8"-5'9" and I went with the 2" lower than stock Cee Bailey when I replaced the OEM shield.....the air bubble is about 2" above my helmet and I can see MUCH easier in the rain now....line of vision is right at the edge of the shield or I can tuck in a little and look through the top of it in a hard rain....... cooldude

That show chrome  windshield is 2" over stock and 4"  wider per side. I'm 6'2" and it is prefert for me. You can easily cut the height down to suit you, the side width sure is a plus in wet or cold weather. I wear a half helmet almost all the time and can hear my radio better at speed from the speakers than I can with my full face and head phones. I believe it is due to the mic picking up wind noise and feeding it back to me. I did upgrade the speakers with J&M speakers as the old  ones were in sad shape after 10 yrs.

Well I decided to cut down the Show Chrome shield by 2" to start with, the height is still a little high, about one more inch would be great. (thats what she said)  2funny  But the bad news is that the Fu@%^#* thing CRACKED...  tickedoff  Well at least I can ride it a little and decide what height I want to order now...

Without fork wings, a lot of the buffeting you think is coming over the windshield - is coming under the fairing and up over the tank!

Do you have your air vent in the IS fairing blocked or open? You may want to play around with that by putting a piece of foam in there, and then trying it without. That vent relieves a lot of the negative pressure that can build behind the fairing while riding. Only drawback is that bugs and stuff come up through there as well, and the inside of the shield tends to get dirtier.

As far as the shield cracking, I believe the show chrome is Acrylic, while the HL original was Lexan. Acrylic will crack easier. I mask the whole area on the windshield I want to cut with that blue painters tape, make my marks and guidelines where I want to cut. I use an Electric Scrolling saw, with a fine tooth (made for plastic) blade, and then even use a power sander after using a good sharp flat file to dress up the cut. Only when all done do I remove the tape.

The OE IS shield is 15.5" (a half inch is used to mount under the chrome cover).  At 5'9" it is perfect for me on an ultimate big boy seat (one inch taller than stock seat), but on the other bike I have the ultimate low boy (one inch under stock seat height) and it is just a bit too tall on that bike.... I can see over ok but more of a straight posture than I like.  But, I run an Airhawk air cushion on both seats (except in Winter), so I see over on both fine.

At 5'10" on a stock seat, I think you don't want much shorter than 1 - 1 1/2 inch under stock shield height ... 14.5 - 14, assuming you like an open face helmet.  Before you make up your mind (esp if you're buying a new one), it would be good if you could sit on a stock-shield IS.

I have been wanting a (bit) shorter summer shield, but never got around to it.
