Had 4 year old diesel fuel in ford truck tank. I tried to siphon it but there was some left. Pulled tank and got the rest out.

Question is, What do I do with the old fuel? Does diesel go bad like gasoline?

What does this diesel fuel feed?

How big of a tank are we talking about?

Dad's, (father-in-law) old over the road tractor used to get all the old diesel fuel we happened to accumulate over the winter.

We had his road tractor and 5 diesel tractors, farm type like.    Farm units were picky on how fresh the fuel was, but his old Cummins could care less as long as it got fire from the squish of the piston.   It had pre-heaters and you could get it good and hot and if it would make combustion, it would keep on running.   I think it would almost run on kerosene.   It also helped to have a 200 gallon tank hanging in the saddle.   Say 150 gallon of fresh fuel with 50 gallon of trash, it ran pretty good, at least to get rid of the stale stuff..

Yes, is does get kind of yucky at times.

Just talked to 3W-lonerider and he explained a bunch to me. Bottom line, I should get rid of the fuel. Prolly has algae in it.

RJ, 2002 f350 7.3 powerstroke, 40 gallon tank only about 6 gallons in it.

Thanks again 3W-lonerider. cooldude

Diesel is worse than gasoline because it has a tendency to trap water in pockets allowing algae and other crud to form. As you can imagine this is bad for FI and combustion. Get rid of the old stuff and take a good look inside the tank if you can. I've seen old aircraft fuel tanks with what looks like coral growing in it after a couple of years. Nasty stuff.

I took off the big ass nut that holds the fuel pickup sending unit in place. I wiped the inside of the tank with a white rag and didnt get any black algae on the rag. The screen was clean also. I didnt see any black stuff at all. cooldude I hope that is a good sign.

Gonna button it back up tomorrow morning in case I am overlooking something and someone sets me straight.

I found one time that my Valkyrie can run on diesel.

Have to keep the 'r's up and smokes like hell,

But it will run.

Not good though.  Running that is!

Chuck,  How about the fuel in the lines to the injectors sitting for these years?

I was wondering the same thing. Lol That old diesel fuel works good on fire ants. We get a bunch of ant hills here in GA. Pour the old fuel on them and light it. No more fire ants

The Story:

It happened while riding to Gulfport, Miss.

I filled up an empty gas tank at an old style gas station on I-20.

After a few miles I noticed the bike was losing power and running badly.

Ten more miles and the motor wouldn't run unless I held the throttle wide open, smoking like crazy.

Got off at an exit in Alabama (sign says a Honda dealer up the road) let the motor die because of traffic.

Cranked the motor and got it running (keeping it @ 3k rpm's) making it to the dealer.

They siphoned off all the tank and put in 5 gallons of fresh gas.

After a few miles the bike smoothed out.

I figure the mixture was 85% diesel and the balance gasoline.

I've heard of gasoline engines that have been run on diesel. Never the other way around though.

Though there are turbine engines rated to run up to 50 hours on gasoline.

I've heard of light piston aircraft being inadvertently fueled with jetfuel instead of avgas. They usually know towards the end of the takeoff roll or at the beginning of climbout that something is terribly wrong.  If they make it back around, the engines are usually toast - pistons melted, etc.  On the other hand, the J34's that the old P2Vs had outboard of the recips ran continuously on 115/145.
