I just discovered that my Cobra 6 into 6 pipes have baffles in them . My question is, if I take those out could that possibly cause the engine any harm, & would that make it obnoxiously loud ?

loud...... yes....... Baffles out cause problems? It could, depends, When the pipes were changed did the carbs get a re-jet?...... If take baffles out and you are running borderline lean, you might push it over into the very lean side....... I would take out the plugs, look at them, put new ones in for about 500 miles, take them out......... take out baffles, install new plugs again, 500 miles, take them out and compare plugs to see if running on the lean side.........

This looks like an appropriate thread for this question...
How the heck do you get the baffles out? I know the is the small phillips screw that gets removed, but damn, they sure seem to be stuck in there. I figure it's just carbon but what does one use to pull them out?
I have seen some removeable baffles that have a loop on the end to hook onto and yank, but these don't. I wondered about maybe spraying some deep-creep in the pipes as that's supposed to dissolve carbon, but I really think some force may be needed.
Any thoughts or idears?

What did you grab on to so you could turn them? A pair of pliers on the very edge or what?

If you pull the baffles out it will be VERY LOUD. It will also kill some more power than baffled Cobras already do if that matters to you. If you are having a hard time getting them out it might be best to leave them in as they are carboned up or possibly rusted up a bit. Been there done that with the Cobras.

the baffles have a little cross bar on them. I made a little tool that I could stick in there and hook on the cross bar and tap out with a small hammer. Cleaned the round ends up with some scotch brite when I re installed them and they came out easier. I never noticed the loss of HP with the baffles in or out. I am sure there was some loss but these bikes run great + or - a few HP.

Aquaman, yes it will be VERY loud. Some of the baffles had a bar, some did not, long nosed straight pliers help. Push and twist and pull. Keep working them around, they will be stuck from carbon and rust.

When I had the 6x6's on mine I used a small set of fingers (neighbor's kid) to screw the screw in from the inside with a piece of flat stock drilled to fit the screw that was bent into an "L", and then used a hammer to tap them out by striking at the bent end of the metal.

hmmm, youngpup, that sounds like an idea that'll work. I might give that a try.
I know they'll be loud and will lose a couple hp. I doubt I'd leave them out anyway, I just wanted to see what they sounded like. Curiosity more or less.

A long allen wrench in the jaws of vice grips works very good. Stick the small end partially into the screw hole of the baffles then pull while turning... works best when the pipes are warm.

A buddy of mine took his baffles out and has ran that way for years now. He mentioned that he tried to put them back in once and with the carbon buildup it was no longer possible. So at some point (and it might take a real long time) putting the baffles back in might be difficult.

I can't imagine the riding all day with the noise from unbaffled cobras, save up some money for tickets and hearing aids in the future. Oh, and riding behind in any group rides. On the other hand, they sound good with the baffles in. Just sayin, Hoser

Mine slid right out with a little penetrating oil after 12 years. IMO, the bike runs 2x better with them in. Never had three bike rejetted and runs just fine either way but I can tell a huge difference at low speeds with them in.

I think you'll like the way the bike runs better if you leave the baffles in place.
If you damage them trying to remove them you will have a tough time trying to replace them....just a thought.
I rejetted my bike when I installed the K&N (w/o pre-filter) and installed the Cobra 6x6s. Had the bike dyno tuned to gain back some of the lost hp. Got it to 90 hp at 5280 feet (Denver) after jetting. No popping.

Stock, piggies cut, rear baffles drilled 1/2 inch, truck stacks and grumpy's stack tips. Up from 94 hp. Something said about stock exhaust mods. Hoser
