While reading this thread:

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,42390.0.html

It made me think about what could be (easily) connected to the CD
player connector on the IS radio.

When I was reading up on the 1800 Wing some time ago, I noticed
that there was an MP3 Player that could be hooked into the CD connector
and offered use of the stock CD controls for the MP3.

Anybody know offhand if this would work for the Valk?

I'll do the research if nobody knows.

There are Ipod/MP3 mounts for handle bars then run a extension wire to the I/S aux input.

Already running the aux input to the Zumo 550 cradle. May just go with that.
The owners manual has very little to say about the CD setup, and it appears
that the CD plugs are different between the IS and the GL1800.

I was hoping to use the stock radio controls for the BikeMP3 player as
used on the Wing.

I've done some digging for the same thing - it would be nice to be able to keep my iPod out of the weather, but haven't found anything for it.  Plenty for the 'wing though.  Sad

Ed, you get that one figured out, I'd buy a harness if it's reasonably priced!  I often wondered if that 1800 harness could be easily modified.

I'm still curious enough to have a look at the wiring for both and
see what is what. I'll bring this back if it looks possible.

Anybody had the CD player on the IS?
Would like an idea of what the CD controls do.

Iirc, the CD controls were actually the remote control the cd player came with.  There wasn't a cd option for the I/S therefore you can't control it through the I/S stereo.

I have heard of an adapter that will allow you to run the voice prompts from a gps through the intercom instead of the stereo.  Site says it works on 1500 Wings.  I wonder if it will plug into our intercom harnesses.

I have looked into this a bit. The audio system on the IS was from Clarion. That included the CB. I think the audio control and display have a CD funtion built into them. The radio has a CD in 13 pin connector. (C-BUS) But from what I gather Honda never released the changer for the IS.

The audio system is C-BUS in nature and is older. Few if any vendors have made adapters to connect MP3/IPOD devices to the CD Changer connector.

The Yamaha Venture used Clarion as well. I put a Venture CB on my IS. Plugs in and works fine. Clarion made a CDC-635 CD Changer for the Venture.

Yamaha has a device called ISimple if it still exists on there site. Pricy. Its possible it might work on the IS. I'm guessing you get the cable that goes with this. It plugs in the CD Changer connector on the IS radio. The other end of the cable plugs into the ISimple. You might have to get this from Yamaha as I don't think ISimple sells it direct.

I would guess your playslists on IPOD would turn into CDs. So you might be able switch between 6 playlists from the Audio control. The other control I would assume would be tracks within playlist. Looks like it would also charge the IPOD/IPHONE.

http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/products/modelscitemdetail/5/586/83/18654/2001/1/11029/0/1/detail.aspx

You might be able to make a cable based on what I found on the 13 pin C-BUS CD Changer cable.

Looks like pin 7 is L channel and pin 8 is R channel. pin 6 is your signal ground. The CD and track controls as well as power for charging are beyond what I have been able to gather. You would also need to find out what pins to trick the radio into thinking a CD changer is present. I have read that some have put switches across two of the pins. Or there was even mention of a resister.

Over the AUX in you could gain playlist and track control. As well as charging. The cost of the Isimple is a limiting factor.

My experience with the aux hookup for the Interstate radio is this:

It worked good, only good, because the mp3 player did only put out enough for moderate volume from the Interstate radio with both the mp3 player and the radio at full volume.

The mp3 player only lasted about four or five hours on the battery since I had to have it at full volume.

If I were to go back to that setup I would definitely look for an inline amplifier between the two and also a way to hook the mp3 player up to the bike electronics to keep the battery from discharging too quickly.

Seems to me a similar situation would occur when trying to adapt a cd player to the same aux input.

The AUX in is not same input as the CD
Changer. The AUX provides simple
Audio playback via mp3 or iPod.

I think whats being asked is what
can be attached and controlled via
The CD changer input. Giving advanced
Control over mp3/iPod devices and
Possibly charging.

The audio sound level might be same
experience as AUX.

Thx. I may look into this when I have time.
Until then I've got the aux hookup.

There was one listed a little while ago.  Had a pic of the Instruction manual.  Said Clarion CD changer for Valkyrie Interstate.  The IS has a CD hook up cable on the radio.

I've got the same clarion 6 disc CD changer as linked above but rarely use it since I have the mp3 player hookup but don't have the fm modulator remote control.  It works pretty good on smooth roads but really need to add foam insulation around the unit mounted in the top trunk of my I/S to absord the bumps in the road so it doesn't skip all the time.  Really should take it out and sell it since rarely used also so I have more trunk space for items and to store 2 helmets in instead of 1.

It appears that the CD player for the Valk came with separate controls. The
only thing you could do with the stock radio was to select CD (just like you would select AUX).
So no real gain for the work it would involve.

I'm  not so sure. Look at the label to the left of the tune lever. D-CHG could mean disk select. T-SEL could mean track select. If you got a IPOD type adapter such as the Isimple. Moving the tune lever up would cycle through up to 6 playlists. Moiving the tuner lever down would cycle though tracks within a playlist.

The IS CD player for sale. Looks to be setup as a standalone unit and might use the IS AUX in. I don't see a 13 pin C-BUS cable that would connnect the CD player to the round 13 pin connector on the IS radio. My guess with this CD unit is you would select AUX as your source on the Valk controls and operate the CD player from its own contol panel shown in the picture. I'm wondering if this CD player also has a 13 pin C-BUS connector. If so you could just connect the CD player right to the IS radio CD player connector and elimate the separate controls.

I currently use my IPOD though the AUX in of the IS. It would be nice to gain control over playback and also have the IPOD charging at the same time. The Isimple for the Venture might do that if its C-BUS based. But its more then I would one to spend.

If one had all the pin info on the IS connector and IPOD its possible that you could make such an interface. You need to find out the Left-Right audio pins including ground. You then need to know what pins needs connected to make the IS radio think a CD changer is present. Then you need to know what pins provide power to charge the IPOD and control playlists.

OK, shamelessly stole this from GL1800 riders site:

How to Install a BikeMP3 Player
After learning of the new product which plays MP3 files through the GL1800 audio system, I ordered one of the units. Below is a how to description of installing the unit.

After receiving it, I laid out the two parts on the seat.

There is a processor unit and a connector cable. A AA battery shown in the picture to give some perspective.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/tkbowman/Wing/Farkles/BikeMP3%20Install%205-31-09/BIKEMP3001.jpg

Here's a closeup of the processor unit. There's only a reset button and an LED showing the unit is on. On the end of the unit is an SD card slot (the unit has been tested with up to an 8gig SDHC card), and a USB slot. (more on that later). On the side of the unit is an input from an MP3 player. I didn't test that feature for this HOWTO.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/tkbowman/Wing/Farkles/BikeMP3%20Install%205-31-09/BIKEMP3002.jpg

The first step is to remove the seat. Then find the connector that is used for the factory CD changer. If you have and are using the factory CD changer, you will need to disconnect it if you are going to use the BIKEMP3 player. Below is a picture of the connector which I found just in front of the frame cross member and behind the fuse panel.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/tkbowman/Wing/Farkles/BikeMP3%20Install%205-31-09/BIKEMP3003.jpg

You just push the provided cable into the factory connector until it clicks indicating a secure connection. I found that I had to use a small needle nose pliers to get enough leverage to insure a firm and secure connection.

The rest just deals with running the wires on the Wing, and installing the unit in the trunk.
This is the MP3 unit I was thinking about, IIRC it runs right around $100.

Food for thought.

Here is the basic unit for GL1800:

http://bikemp3.com/GL1800-Digital-Music-Player-V3-HGW-IPD-V03.htm

And for use with Ipod allowing charging and control:

http://bikemp3.com/GL1800-iPod-Integration-Unit-HGW-IPD-IP3.htm

Other places sell almost identical units.

I think I will Email the company and ask them for the pinout on the 15 pin
plug on the unit and see if there might be some compatibility on the signals
required to operate.
I'm hoping Honda didn't change much in order to keep costs down.
