So being the cheap SOB I am I was looking for a rider backrest for my 2001 I/S that's cheaper than a Utopia when I stumbled across these on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Valkyrie-Custom-Curved-Driver-Back-Rest-Backrest-/230792454890?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bc4d62ea&vxp=mtr

Think it would work fine if I bolted it to the bottom of the seat like a Utopia? I know it wouldn't fold forward but I could bend the bar to adjust to my riding style. Price is nice.

Look around on all the computer auctions. I happened into a Utopia backrest already mounted to an I/S seat for total cash outlay of $150.00. coolsmiley I've seen offerings on e-bay in that similar price range $100.00  $150.00. Put a wanted in the classifieds on our board. First time you want to carry a passenger and the seat no go forward-you figure out the ending!! cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Some have reported about driver backrests causing damage to the rear fender.

Reason being that they fasten to the mounting points to which the riders pillion fastens.

Those particular points are not sufficiently strong to handle the forces applied with the drivers weight acting against them.

The damage is usually confined to stress cracks forming and eventually cracking across the full expanse of the fender.

Go for the Utopia..... worth the money and very durable and the company is very good...

Had an accident and they sent replacement parts right away at low cost...

Adjustable and comes off easy if you want it out of the way... tips down for passenger to get on.....

$179 but worth it.. have had one on bikes for 20 years......never a problem.

The interstate doesn't have a separate passenger pillion like the standards so this wouldn't be a problem. Backrest mounts to seat base itself.

On a standard or tourer, does the Utopia mount to the drivers seat or the passenger seat mounting holes?

Mounts to the front two mounting bolt holes on the passenger seat.

Yes.....  Bolt holes, the I/S version bolts to the seat pan, the Standard regular version that I have now uses the fender bolt holes...... for Solo seat

But I will say, I was rear ended hard enough to bent the bracket and backrest  (I/S version) and did not do anything to the fender... not even a dent. must be the design of the bracket... It seems longer that some of the other mounts......

Will that backrest even work with the standard I/S seat?

Also, I don't think you could modify that for the interstate.... and would make quite a hole in the seat and the pan, because the I/S seat is one piece....

The Utopia mount goes thru a hole already in the seat pan..... you only have to cut a slit in the cover and foam.... And it seems like it bolts to holes already there????? I will have to go out and look at the seat.... put it on 2 years ago.

Does anyone have a pic of the Utopia mounted on a solo set up?  I checked the web site but didn't see one.

The pad seems large compared to the Mustang one I have.  Doesn't look like it's as adjustable as the Mustang either.

I have  2 of the ones in the link.
Good value, well made and works great for me
On the IS I swapped the IS seat for  2 piece std seat before mounting the backrest..

Glad I read this; the potential problem on the IS Utopia is true. I just checked and the rear of the bracket has worn thru the paint and has started digging into the steel of the fender. I guess I'll have to get a steel and rubber pad of some kind to protect the fender.
