Day 1 Recap.......   Wash to Overland Park Kansas.

Back at it!  After being home for a mere 14 days, the road was calling again.  And who am I to say no??
After the excitement involving the sagging carrier from my last trip, and not wanting to any longer test the strength of 1/4 steel, I opted for the trailer.  Upon starting to load the stuff, I was amazed at how much storage was avaiable.  I"ve the HF Tagalong, and only used it once two years ago.  Had the tongue extended, cooler rack installed, and did some new wiring for the lights.  I was ready.  Of course that ample space was soon filled, as now I can haul even more stuff!    Table, chair, coffee maker, full stove, box of tools, box of hot sauce, (gotta have those condiments)....and plenty of other camping "essentials".   Packed all day Thursday so I was ready for an early AM Departure.

Left Washington about 7:40 AM.    Weather was great.  About 60 degrees, sunny, and bright.   Headed West down Highway 100.  Gently rolling hills, a few pig farms, and was soon in Hermann, MO.

In the background above is the Hwy 19 Bridge over the "Big Muddy"....(Missouri River).  Crossed the river on that Bridge and traveled Hwy 94 into Jefferson City, where I picked up US 50, (the longest US Hwy) entroute to Blue Springs, and the home of Bon S.

Having traveled this route many times, I was quite familiar with its surroundings,  so there wasn't much for me to discover.  However, the 8 Ball water tower in Tipton was worthy of an image.

A former manufacturer of  Billiards  Supply, this company is long gone, but the water tower was recently repainted to its former glory.   You could say this town has a big ball.

Was soon in Sedallia, MO and dropped in on an old acquaintance for a quick hello, then was soon in KC and met up with Bon S.  We rode to Porky's for some very excellent BBQ.  This place does it well.

Returned back to Bon's garage, and got to work on some wiring issues.  Bon was great!!   Many thanks to him for getting some of my wiring back in order!  (I had to note it was nothing I did, but can blame it on a previous owner)....I think my next purchase will be an accesory block, as my battery now has about 5 things wired to it!!  Here is the Man at work.....

And this is how I park...

Left Bon's about 6:00, and headed to my destination in Overland Park to visit a friend from High School.  Had not seen her in 25 years.   Still drinkin like high school!!

Going to do a little crusing around the KC area.  Going to show my host some of the seedier places.  Perhaps a ride down Troost?

Day  2    5/19/2012    Around KC    Everyone knows it Windy......

Out here in Kansas, (although I'm only 6 miles from Missouri) I was informed by my host of how strong the winds can be.  And yesterday was no exception.  Wow, while riding around KC, the winds had to be gusting at least 30 mph.  And it seemed it was never the same direction.  Made for some interesting riding.

I'm staying in Overland Park, KS.  Yes, Kansas.  It is quite difficult, as both Karen and her Husband  attended the University of Kansas.  I attended the University of Missouri.  Of course, when I arrived I was donning a Mizzou shirt, and of had another ready for yesterday.  Have to show that school pride.  (Even though Mizzou had one the biggest blunders of the year, when they blew a 25+ point lead and lost to Kansas in late Feburary.  But it was the refs fault of course!!)   One could say it is a pretty strong rivalry.   It was one of the longest running, up until Mizzou bolted for the SEC.

Debagged the Valk and took off around 12:00.  Karen was up for a ride, so we headed North and first stop was the Overland Park Market.

Located in “Old Town”, it was a typical open air market.  I did find some nice 1015 Onions.   Living in Texas for a few years, I learned about the 1015's origins.

A special hybrid developed at Texas A&M, and first germinated or something like that on October 15, hence the name.  They are only available once a year.  Picked up a box and they were a great addition the guacamole I assembled later in the day.

After a quick stroll through the market, and a couple fruit and vegetable shots,

we headed back to Missouri, to do yet another “pop in” at an old friends from Mizzou.  Unfortunately, he was not home.  Well, where to next?  Headed down Ward Parkway to the “Plaza”, and visited the most famous of the 200+ fountains located in the area.

Close to Main, and feeling for a little more Urban setting, headed East towards downtown.  A new building appeared on the Horizon, and quite a spectacular structure it is.

While photographing this magnificent structure, lo and behold a Valk sighting occurred.  Red and Black Interstate.  Made a big wave while along side my Valk.  Thought maybe a U turn was going to occur, but alas, none was to be found.

Well, where to know???  Not sure.  Thought about finding the Amtrak station, but while cruising north on Main, made it to the second Farmer's Market of the day.  This was much larger than the OP Market.  A tip for anyone who likes to smoke, one of the vendors had huge bags of wood, (cherry, apple, mesquite, etc) for $8.00.  I believe it was a half bushel.

Best find here were some great avacados  ( .50 a piece) and cilantro.  Guacamole was in my future.  Then decided I was going to cook dinner for my hosts, so I picked up a few poblano peppers.  But then needed chorizo and chihuahua cheese, (to stuff in the peppers) so we headed back West to KC,  Kansas to the El Torito Super Mercado, where we picked up the aforementioned ingredients.

Karen was digging the ride, so how about a visit to the Boulevard Brewery!

After trying to find it in the garmin database, (only took two attempts to get the right category,) discovered it was only about 4 miles away.  They do tours, but you must register online.  The tours commence  at the top of every hour, and we were going to just miss the 3:00 tour.   After arriving at the Brewery, we found out it really didn't matter that we were late.  It was all filled, the 4:00 tour had a waiting list of 10.  The dude working the reception area was really informative.  So much he said the tours fill up as much as three months in advance!!  But he said there was a good chance we could get in the 4:00 pm tour, as often times people do not show.  Not wanting to wait almost an hour, we politely declined and I asked him if we could have some free beer anyway!  Got some laughs from some of the others waiting, and much to my surprise, the guy returned with two glasses of the Stout!   Looks like a great tour, and at the end plenty of free samples.  Hope to return.

Twas time to head back South to Overland Park, and  battled the winds on 35 and 69.  Arrived safe, ande Karen headed out to pick up some Negra Modelo.  I started cooking the Chorizo and making the Guac.   Was a great day.

Here is the HDR shot of the day.......

In a few hours, will pack back up, reattach the trailer, and head for Eureka Springs, via Afton, Oklahoma to visit my friend at her Afton Station Museum on Route 66.

Can I suggest you add to this thread rather than creating a new one each day. That way it will keep popping to the top as you make a new post and as people reply.

Your Day 1 post has already vanished from Page 1.

I dunno about others but I rarely go past Page one of threds.

I agree.

Day 3  Overland Park, (Stanley) to Afton and Eureka Springs.......5/20/2012

Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas,  Improving Chinese Relations, and the best sunset ever!!

Often times people will ask me how I  “got that shot”.....Often times it happens by chance, luck, etc.  Riding around, I”ll see something and shoot it.  A friend described my style me as a Safari Photographer.  I ride around and find things to shoot.   Other times I will have a specific scene that I want to capture.  I “envision” what I want, then hopefully go and make it happen.  Sometimes it works, other times not.  Today it worked.  And it worked amazingly!!  Yes, for those of you who know me well, I have become greatly annoyed at the overuse of the adjective amazing.   It has become “the” word to describe just about anything.  Even one of my son's friends described the the applesauce from the school lunch as amazing.  Really, applesauce??  Amazing?  Perhaps it was tasty, but amazing????

For those of you who were able to witness the eclipse this evening, it truly was amazing.  I'll even go as saying it was awesome, incredible, magical, magnificent, breathtaking, (I did find myself almost gasping)!!!   Well, where's the image???  Ah, I'll get to it soon, as it was the end of the day.

Back to my explanation of the visualization that I do.  Realizing a very rare eclipse was going to be occurring, I envisioned a shot overlooking Beaver Lake.  But where was I going to be situated??  Had to be up high.  I wanted some of the lake, a few trees, and of course, a nice unobstructed view of the sun.   I found it at the Pointe West Motel.  A few months ago, my friend and proprietor of the Retreat At Sky Ridge, as we were driving along 187 near Beaver Lake told me that if I wanted a sunset shot, this was the place.  Of course I had forgotten about his tip, until I rode by.  I drove in, introduced myself and Kathy the manager was so accommodating she let me use one of the rooms balconies.   From my searching, it was supposed to start happening around 8:20PM.   Fortunately, I arrived about 7:45 and as soon as we looked over the lake, it was starting!!  Very quickly I grabbed the camera, tripod, and started firing away.  What I had envisioned was all happening!!  It was AMAZING!!

After that, the early part of the day just won't compare.  Although it was still pretty nice.  Left Overland Park about 11:45, headed South on 69 for about 100 miles, or a good hour and a half.  Now an hour and a half of 69 is usually quite enjoyable.  Not this 69, as it was in Kansas and pretty damn boring!! For about 50 miles it was nothing but a road.  And at least one small curve.  Picked up the MotherRoad, (Route 66) in near Galena.  I've covered 66 extensively, but wanted to get a new shot of the Rainbow Marsh Arch Bridge.  A very unique, and last remaining bridge of its type..(at least on 66).....

As I pulled up, another cyclist was just dismounting.  His name was Yan, and he was from Shanghai Chiner!!  He flew in to New York, rode to Chicago, and is know taking 66 all the way to California.  We exchanged pleasantries,  I took a few shots of him with his camera, and he wanted one of us together.  Guess we were instant buddies!!!

I was headed to Afton, where my friend Laurel has a very cool place called the Afton Station.  Filled with a ton of 66 paraphernalia,  and close to, if not more, 20 Packards!!  And best of all it is free!! She closes up shop at 3:00, but hung out for a while longer as Yan was checking out the cars.  A few mintues later, a few others showed up.

Anywho, I'm going to be back on Tuesday, where I will be meeting up with Stan D Cool to ride and guide him along 66 for a few days.

That's all for today.  A good day with an amazing ending!!
