But today I fell getting out of bed and I'm sure I broke my right shoulder. I was in such pain and moving my arm just about sends my into such a state of excrucitiating pain that I see stars. I refused to go to the emergency room because last clavicle break they gave me Vicodin, a shouder sling and said that I should get fitted for a shoulder brace. And no driving for six weeks. Yeah right.
Well I was able to dress myself and took about six Aleve, but I was BORED to tears. I got a wild hair in my butt and decided to go for a ride. After a few stron pain killers, I got brave enough to take my Interstate out for a short ride (stupid move I know).
OK, I made several stupid mistakes or worse. I know and have preached that drugs and motorcycles don't mix. I could have hurt myself worse or even killed myself.
I will be the first to admit that I was WRONG on so many levels. Please heed my words,...we may be less than intelligent at times, but it will catch up sooner or later. Don't do as I've done. I was lucky, or maybe God has another purpose for me (an example of how not to ride).

Well there is some GOOD news there. You are still here to tell us about it, which is far far better than the alternative. Might have to bite the bullet and drag your butt in to see the doctor. You don't want to put yourself in the position that you may never be able to ride again.

George, what the heck were you thinking of? First, loading up on all that stuff you could have OD'd, then while under the influence of it all you decided to go for a ride? Just glad it all came out OK, but geez man....go stand in front of the mirror and slap yourself a couple times. You owe it to your lovely lady to be more cautious. By the way, re. falling out of bed and breaking your collar bone, I have a question. Hmmm....on second thought, I won't ask.

Go see the doc, they may want to but a plate in. It will heal faster and better than just a sling in some cases. My ortho also ordered a bone density scan making sure there are healthy bones to heal. I feel ya brother those collar bones hurt. Be careful like John said those drug combo's will get you.

In my younger (20s) I used to get really wasted and ride. I survived, but I can't say why. But getting close to sixty I realize that I'm not immortal,...so I'm gonna blame it on really strong prescribtion drugs and my refusal to stay still (no more recliner in the living room).

George,
Glad you survived! Now that you have taken care of the butt chewing, I can just wish you a fast recovery. Now tomorrow go to your doctor and get it taken care of properly so you can get back to SAFELY riding!

Nothing to say here except get yourself looked at; things that don't knit together correctly are much harder to re-fix at our exalted ages. I drove drunk many times, high many others. Even rode a bicycle 10 miles home on a 2 lane highway, after dark, smashed out of my gourd. Have never ridden a motorcycle high on anything except for emotions, though. Trust me, you don't have the patent on stupidity. I had a 10 year head start on you...

Hey Momz, I'm not trying to beat you up for taking an opioid pain reliever and riding. There are a couple of legal issues you may be aware of but I think should be voiced so we all learn from your experience. First if you had been pulled over for a traffic infraction, you could have been arrested for DUI. DUI laws cover operating a vehicle under alcohol or drugs, whether they be prescription or non prescription. Additionally, if involved in an accident while under the influence, the chance of losing everything you've worked for in a lawsuit increases substantially.

I've had 3 busted clavicles in my life. First one was at about a year old. Climbed out of the high chair. Mom didn't realize it till about a week later when she took my shirt off and my chest was a solid bruise. Second one was at about 2 years old. Climbed out of the baby bed. Hospital thought my parents were beating me. Third one was at my sister's band concert when I was about 8. Playing tag and slipped and fell. Braced myself with left arm and snapped the bone. Brace and Tylenol is all I got. I wish you the best in your recovery, and take it easy, it'll heal faster.

Snapped mine in two when I was in my mid 30's - fell while scateboarding with my boys. This came about a month after breaking my wrist. . . .scateboarding with my boys (we quit scateboarding after that as it was too dangerous - we took up motorcycling instead). Any way, went to the ER. They gave me vicodin and put my arm in a brace to immobilize my shoulder. I asked the doctor wasn't he going to set the bone or anything like that and he said no, that they only do that with girls. Which I though was odd. He said that unless I'm planning on wearing low cut outfits, there was no need for my clavicles to look symmetrical, that the break would fuse back together on its own. Which I still thought was odd - seems like it would fuse back together shorter than the other side and cause me to run in circles or wear the outside of my left shoe or something. I still have a big lump there where it fused back crooked.

Don't feel too bad, George. Remember the nursery tale, "10 little monkeys bouncing on the bed, one fell out and broke his head", so you were lucky.

It makes no difference how you do it, if you break something, let a doctor fix it. Don't be embarrassed about how or why it happened - just fix it. Clavicle breaks hurt like heck - did that, too (but that was in a motorcycle crash).
I fractured a rib SNEEZING a couple of months ago. Got ridiculed by my family relentlessly. But I still went to the doctor. Got no help but pain pills, but I then knew that I had nothing worse going on.
What you did afterwards - well, you know it wasn't smart - but you will beat yourself up far worse than anyone else will.
Glad you did not do further damage - now get well!
