Hey all, I have a 99 I/S and have just recently experienced intermittent starter failure. A week ago I stopped at store went in came back out and just got click when I hit starter. I push started the bike and got home, tried to start it once home and would not start. It’s a newer battery and had a full charge according to volt meter. Next day still would not start so I started poking around and thought it might be the starter relay but before I replaced the relay the bike all of a sudden started. Rode bike for about a week then this past Sat morning would not start again. I replaced the starter relay but that did not help. After many times pushing the starter button and only getting a click the bike all of a sudden started? I then went on a ride for over 250 miles with several stops and the starter is still working., Now what? I assume that since I push started the bike a week ago, that there is not any trbl with the kickstand switch or the kill switch on the handlebar, if there was the bike would never push start right?. Could I have a bad spot on the starter. The bike has 35k on it, I bought it about 2 years ago with only 3500 miles on it. It sat for many years unused by previous owner. I’m puzzled, I got a bike trip planned to TN in 2 weeks and need to get this fixed, any ideas? Do I need a new starter? Any ideas how to troubleshot this problem?
Thanks Scott

Sounds like the starter button. If so, it's a quick and easy fix...and free. http://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/starter.html

Ok but when I hit the starter button the headlight goes out so I figured the starter button would be ok? What do you think?

+1 on the starter switch. My wifes trike did the same thing last summer. It was the starter switch. Easy fix.

I mite be missing something here, but did you charge the new battery before installing it? If the answer is no then this could be your problem.

+1 on the starter button. Mine developed a tarnish on the contact, simple to open up and clean contacts. I also pried up the little copper contact tab out of the plastic so it would make better contact. There is a little ball and spring in there that pushes down but allows the switch to slide forward disengaging the power to head lights and engageing the power to a relay for the starter. Quick fix. Another issue I had that did something similar was when I had a poor contact on battery terminal this spring. It looked ok and felt tight, however it required cleaning of contacts to get it working right. It would click once and then no power to the system. Let it set for a couple of minutes and power would come back when I turned the key on, the green neutral light would light up, push starter and green light would go out. I was able to push start it and it would run. I suggest you do the easy stuff first.

If you're just getting a 'click' then clean the start switch.. If you get nothing then it may be the kill switch, just work it a dozen times or clean it..

Ok thanks guys. I have done the starter button maint on my old Valk, but thought with the low mileage this bike would not need it yet, guess I also gotta remember that this bike is 13 years old now and time can do damage too. I'll do the starter button maint in the next night or 2 and let ya know what I find.

Cant hurt, then at least you know what it is or what it isint. Make sure the brass thing with the two bumps is bouncy bouncy (spring working) and not stuck in the plastic grooves
