OK. I realize that I must be living up to my reputation as the poor man's Muppet here Embarrassed Embarrassed... but here's the problem..

I took the  airbox off and am having trouble getting it back on.... Its in the space alright and nothing is fouling under it as far as I can see, but the stubby hoses that connect the box to the carbs don;t seem long enough... Its a real struggle to pull them down and then they don't fit nice and square. They keep wanting to pull back off the inlet stubs... Shocked

Is it normal to have this problem... and is there a fix?!! ??? ???

I don't remember using any strings or tie-downs when I put mine back on, but I do
remember it being an exercise in patience...

Make sure you get all six of those boots on in the back, we used one of those little mirrors on a
stick at Stanley Steamer's house to make sure his were all on right...

Thanks Mike, but I can't get them on properly at all - they seem to be at an angle and not fitting around the manifolds...like the rubber tubes are just not long enough...

Guess I'll have to try the tie down thingy..

It can definitely be a pain and having someone help you makes it a lot easier.  Have them push the airbox down while you pull the tubes down onto the carbs and tighten the rings.

Change your Subject line to something more meaningful (spaceship=0  2funny )
and maybe more people will see your question... a bunch of people know how to do
it and/or have done it recently... it almost sounds like you don't have the box all the way
down in there, or it is hung up on something... I don't remember those hoses seeming
like they were too short, it's just a little hard to get them to go on all the way around...

I have just done this a few weeks ago and had the exact same problem.
Get a good flashlight, a dental mirror and dental pick.

I think you will find with the mirror and the light that the backside you can't see is not seated correctly, causing the boot to sit at an angle.
The dental pick is great for putting under the lip of the boot and sliding the boot over the manifold port.

Thanks guys - I've gone for the ratchet strap method - its tied down tight and the hoses fit better now - did that last thing last night. Going to tighten the rings today and hope it doesn't ping off!

I did check first to make sure it was not pressing on anything underneath - but all was  clear...

Make sure the wiring on both sides is tucked under the frame rails ! Then after getting the box down reach in the box and grab each tube one at a time and push it onto the carb . I just did a desmog and carb clean and had one heck of a time with the box , like everything else I do it took me a few times to get the carbs clean { finally new jets } so I got pretty good at reinstalling the box . Make sue you get the drain tubes connected.

Thanks everyone.

I tried the ratchet and straps method recommended by hubcapsc and....it worked!

I left it compressed overnight and then did up the clips in the morning.

Its a real difficult job - don't know why they didn't make the hoses longer and perhaps more positive - say a clip on closure. Anyways its done now.
