I'm thinking about getting a tank bag but I don't anything about them.  Anyone know of one that works well with the Valk tanks and covers that gas cap that you can send light flashes to ET?

I really like the t-bag brand I've got.  It's not small so for a daytripper you might like something smaller.

Marty, I have 7 different tank bags that I use (I know, it's a sickness) depending on what I need to do with the Valk. Probably the one I use the most and stays on it most of the time is this: http://www.revpack.com/motorcycle/products/TankPack.html
I have both sizes, but I normally use the larger one.

I'm planning on doing a Saddle Sore 1000 around Labor Day.  I'd like to have a map of my route visible plus stuff like sunscreen, motrin, snacks, etc inside.  So I don't need anything really big.  I would like to block the glare from the gas cap if it reflects the sun into my eyes.

I'd go with the small RevPack one. If you get one of those, contact me as I have a few tips to make it work even better.

Have a magnetic Nelson-Rigg. Works great. Not real big. Does expand a bit if you get carried away with stuff. I leave it in the reduced size. Perfect for the wallet and small stuff that would be in your pockets. Has a folding map pouch on the top. Go in a store or cafe . . . peel it off and carry with you. No big deal. Strong magnets. Wind is a non-issue.

I have a fieldsheer expandable tank bag that I use a lot. ONE thing I don't like about any magnetic bag is that it will scratch the paint on the tank.  I use a micro fiber cloth under the bag to protect the tank, looks kinda dorky that way but I like my tank smooth and shiny.

I can't find a label on mine, but 10x12" and about 6" deep. Good padded magnets (don't mark the paint), full sized map window, safety strap (which helps in the rain, makes passing truck-blast a lot harder). Fairly rain resistant (I can still read the maps inside after two days of rain), room for a few maps, water bottles camera. extra smokes, trip log, ipod and wiring for GPS. Only thing is it's too soft sided. I cut down a shoe box to keep it's shape, works well. I think $20 at a bike show.

I have a Cortec 14 magnetic that I used on a road trip in 2010.

It worked well for the same purpose that you are planning. I have since sold the bike and it is for sale if you are interested.

$50 shipped. What say you?

Did Honda ever make one available? If so, I don't think I've ever seen one. I have some Rex Marsee bags that I used to use on a Moto Guzzi I had for many years. Marsee stuff is very well engineered and very high quality stuff.

I never used a tank bag or bib.  I was always afraid they woud scuff the paint on a perfect tank. How does that not happen?

Look at Olddog's post above.  He's got it figured it out.

I'm concerned with scratching the paint. Early on I tried a thin mircro-fiber cloth or polishing cloth between bag and tank. If it wasn't sliding around it was too much monkey-motion dealing with the extra layer in between. I eliminated the added layer of protection. I pack a small bottle of cleaner juice. Each gas stop I take a moment and clean the dust off the tank before I replace the tank bag. So far--so good. There are some swirls in the (black) paint, but nothing out of the ordinary. After twelve-plus years its not a show bike, so I'm past stressing over it. The convenience for packing the small incidental stuff that you'd normally be digging around for balances out the possible collateral damage associated with carrying the bag. And I don't go anywhere without a clean shiny scoot. Yrmv,  Cool
