last saturday was motorcycle appreciation day here is Idaho.. along with many poker runs etc. there was tons of bikes on the road..one group was riding from idaho falls over to my neck of the woods.. there was approx. 50 riders.. not sure why but for some reason one of em musta locked up his front brakes but he endoed it for a measured 145 ft.  no helmet..OF COURSE and is in intensive care.. THEN later on that day a gal ridin with the same group crossed over the center line and hit a freightliner HEADON.. I am sure you know the outcome of that 1... I havent heard whether or not alcohol was involved and I guess it really doesnt matter but if it wasnt ..that sure was some damn BAD LUCK for that group..

This is why riding in groups with folks I don't know makes me nervous.  Theres always going to be someone that can ride better than you, but twice as many that can't ride as good as you....  Shocked

If I'm not leading, you will find me on the very tail end, usually after the sweeper person.

I can maneuver around some jerk who endoes or is a rear brake only idiot, so, I'm covered there, now up front, I try to put some very good riders following me for interference.   That usually covers my ass on either end.

If I'm leading and I get some riders drinking at all the stops, I politely ask for their keys and tell them they can have them at the end. They no surrender the key, I tell them I'll just dial 911 and tell em to send a squad wagon. Once I threaten that, they usually give up their key.

Every year in the Toy Run a few bikes go down. No serious injuries in the last few years that I've heard of.
Each year my GWRRA  group does the ride, but we don't ride the mapped route or with the main herd. We're used to riding as a group, know the hand signals and understand the etiquette involved, so we do our own ride and donate at the park at the end.
Riding in large groups is OK if you know the group...

I don't ride any longer in groups except with the family.  I like to be in the front because of the noise but that's not good.  If I ride last, I'm riding my OWN ride, much better but too much noise from the open pipes in front of me .....  .so i don't ride in groups.

I rode solo this AM and it was great, my own ride, my own speed, my own responsibility.  I'm not into 'look at me' anymore, especially with my fugly Vstrom Grin.  I don't look at reflections of me in store windows either Cheesy

same here, like to ride in the back of the pack, especially with someone with loud pipes in front of me usually HD's.  I've been caught in the middle a few times and each rider is different.  I admit I am not the best rider out there and in the middle of the pack in terms of ability, but especially when cornering, the guy in front of me usually is on the brakes way too much and I end up catching him and following him way too closely in the curve and that is a bad thing to do especially cornering.  I kept trying to give the rider in front more following distance, but always ended up mere feet away in corners rural roads.  I'm sure he wasn't happy either seeing me in the rearview mirror that close but wasn't trying to tailgate him.  It is just that each rider has their own speed abilities and some go crazy fast and some go crazy slow and sometimes hard to judge distances.

I am almost always alone when I ride, but I will say I love that harmonic when you are riding either alone or next to another Valkyrie

The long trips I have taken with the G-man were a blast.  It fun switching the lead it keeps you on your toes. Also had a great ride with Keith and Jack, and with Griz and lots of others.

Been on group rides with many thousands of bikes   Big deal it was stop and go stop and go  Listen to the noisy bikes and watch folks with no consideration

Looking forward to being in the back of the group when I get to Keystone in June.  Or takin a ride with just a couple of Valks on a side trip somewhere.   Those group rides is a dozen in a group and everyone knows the rules  My #1 is look out for the guy in back of you #2 is when you pass a car DONT SLOW DOWN WHEN YOU PULL BACK INTO THE RIGHT LANE  YOU F IT UP FOR EVERYONE BEHIND YOU   (yes I know I am yelling)    lane changes start with blinker of bike #1 and next last bike moves left for safety so all pass clean

After it looks like Valker and I will be heading into the mountains, a group of 2 is just fine by me

Cant wait for June

Got to admit I do not like large groups. usually by myself or with my Brother in law and his I/S.
If I ride in a group I pull up the rear. Not always the best place if you have cagers that tailgate but I would rather it be me than a new rider on a smaller bike. My wife just turns and takes pics of them and there car. Seems to get the point across.
