I was fine with that, until he went on the outside of the tower for the rest of the climb. Nope not gonna apply for his job.

I get dizzy standing on the third rung of a 5 ft. step ladder. I made it to the 2 minute mark and stopped watching, thought I was going to get sick. There isn't enough money that would get me up there.

There's a very interesting episode on "Frontline" out now on PBS that is called "Cell Tower Deaths". Some of these guys do this for as low as $10.00 per hour. Also, the big companies, ATT, Verizon and the like, can't be held accountable due to using many layers of contractors, even though they set the deadlines that cause the climbers to shortcut and free climb.

I saw that a couple of years ago... no fricken way you'd get me up there, even with a chute. With my luck... I'd fall, open my chute and it would rip on the tower with me plunging to my death.

I used to climb high steel (not 1400 feet) for a living. If you're in good shape it's no big deal when you do it every day. Once over 50 feet or so, you won't survive the fall anyway. However, climbing in high, gusty winds is another story, and forget rain, ice or snow.

Heights used to bother me. I cured that by taking up hang gliding. It's a major rush to run off the top of a mountain with a wing on your back! As Jess said - once you get to 70 ft or so - a fall has the same result. Except you have more time to contemplate the sudden stop, the higher you are. Hang gliding - with height is safety as you have more time and space to do something about a problem. Or throw / deploy the chute - nowadays most fly with a ballistic chute. Rocket deployed, it's open in 2-3 seconds from firing it.
