Im picking up a 1998 Black Tourer this week with 24k one owner miles, Ive done a lot of reading on here and there is a wealth of knowledge ....but I still would like to ask couple of questions to start...bike appears to be well taken care of , but one of my concerns is the reading Ive done on hydrolock, should I rebuild the petcock for piece of mind or get a pingle...from reading and my own bike (vtx 1300R) I am aware of some maintenance but anything I should be aware of....many thanks and have a great holiday...

First .... congratulations on becoming a Valkyrie Rider.  I would not worry about the petcock or hydrolock, however, I would check it periodically and if it starts to leak or it starts to take longer to recover once switching to reserve or it has any signs of fuel starvation those are classic signs it is going south and a Pingel is the fix I chose after trying the rebuld thing only to have more and worse problems less than a year later.

The other thing I would check, is to r/r the rear wheel and check, lube, and reassemble the rear end properly so you have peace of mind about the drivetrain

Enjoy and read Shop Talk in here for the maintenance tips right away

Pix forth coming as soon as I get the bike , but you know what a Black Tourer looks like..LOL...actually it was a toss up between a black/red Interstate 49k that needed some TLC and the tourer ...I decided that the Interstate had too many farkles...now to more questions....PO had new tires installed at 20k at a Dealer would it be sillly to assume that rear maintenance was done..I know how and what to do but would rather ride the beast...many thanks

I would'nt trust a dealer to do that only way to be sure is pull it and see if it was done  cooldude

Never "assume" the splines were lubed. Do it yourself or take it to
someone you trust. Also, learn to do the starter button maintenance.

Welcome
Bought my "Fast Black" 98 Tourer w/22k miles in 2005. Been a great ride. I've made it a solo ride adding a CT, some MP3 music and 2 trouble-free trips cross country. Reading this board I immediately checked the upper shock bushings and mine were in serious trouble.

If you have trouble posting pics maybe we can help.

If the stock seat needs an update some of us have bought the 2000 stock seat(approx. $75).
Here is the old next to the newer version.
I changed mine liking the feel but haven't rode any long trips with it yet.

Congratulations and Welcome!  I would rebuild the petcock.  It's good practice for pulling the tank and getting familiar with everything in there (like air filter element).  Plus, even if it's operating properly now, if its diaphragm is the original, it's pushing 15 years old.

Welcome to the "club".  cooldude
While the VTX is a fine bike, one of the best V-twin cruisers around, you will find yourself riding it less & less as you fully discover the Valkyrie's attributes.  Cool

Enjoy & welcome again!

Welcome to our corner of the insanity. 2funny Even if the I/S needs work-you have come to the right place, Wink If you get the other one(first choice)do pull that rear drive and at the very least look at it. cooldude Also look at the shock bushings-they ain't centered=bad maybe dangerous ride. Lips Sealed I would say that most everyone here is more than willing to help and don't be a bit surprised if some of these folks show up to help iffin you ask. Cool Again-welcome from the Ozarks and let us know please which Valkyrie you end up with. Cheesy RIDE SAFE.

I just recently used the VTX poly bushings on a Valk. Same part #. As for the worries: I have 128K on my 98 Tourer. I replaced one petcock and have never had any hydrolock issues. As much as it's discussed here, it's not very common. Splines at 112K with proper maintenance.

My '98 Valk:

Flange looks good, bearing failure was an issue with some VTX's, looks to be the same flange on a VTX, I have several for back up...we have a fellow on the VTXOA site who machines them ,new bearings and does an core exchange ...
