I didn't have the 750, but I did have the 850 special... great bike. Still wish I would have never gotten rid of it.

I plan to keep mine and put a sidecar on it to haul my dog to town with me.. that said I wouldnt ride one for 300 miles if ya gave it to me.. do a search on ebay completed listings o see what hey are bringin..

Those XS750s are good machines. But resale value is less than stellar. Most Yamaha dealers will not support them: parts, service, etc.
Offer $500.00 and I bet it's the only offer he'd actually have.

That's what I would do. At 53k some hard to find parts may be reaching their maximum lifespan. If he turns you down, leave your phone number and his wife will work on him for you.

I saw one last evening at restaurant across from motel I stayed at in Coleman, TX.
Owner claimed his was an 800. No side covers and not in very good shape but did run.
That one probably worth the $1000.
Good Luck.

I had an XS750 in the late 70's. Never spent a dime on it other than tires and oil changes. A neighbor stole it and set it on fire after driving to a destination 100 miles from my house.
I loved that bike, much like I love my Valkyrie now.

When I said to offer $500.00 it is because there is no great demand for Yamaha Triples. If it were a 1969-1978 Honda 750 in "good" shape his $1000.00 offer might be reasonable (750 Automatics excluded).
But a bike that probably hasn't been run/maintained in years will "nickel and dime" you and most rubber parts will probably be deteriated. But if your looking for that "must have" project, then please try your best to get your best deal.

i had one of the first ones .....it was silver...got it in 1976 if i remember right? anyway, i bought it in the summer...on leave after finishing Tech School at Keesler AFB, MS. i rode my Yamaha 650 twin....to KC, MO/St JO, MO...to visit my folks. While there, i sprung for the "new, radical" 750 triple. Compared to my 650 twin...it was smooth. Compared to bikes like the Honda 750-4....it was not so smooth.
It was reliable. After a short breakin riding around the KC area, i headed on to my first assignment at Norton AFB, CA. The bike was a great bike for that trip. I got the matching fairing and bags. Added a custom seat later. i logged many a mile on that bike.
finally traded it for the XS1100 Yamaha the first year those came out (1978?). My 750 triple did NOT run as strong as many of my buddies Honda 750-4s. but it was reliable and an improvement over the Vtwins i had previously owned...........

Back in the day I was a Moto Guzzi guy, then Yamaha came out with the 750 Triple. Traded my 650 for it and took off for the West Coast from Iowa. Rode it out there in 2 1/2 days, (San Diego) area.
Then the XS1100 came out and presto, that bike hit my man cave and the Triple was gone. That poor Triple set on the dealer's lot for almost 2 years. I bought it back and rode it another 44,000 miles. When it rolled up 00,000 it got parted out. Believe it or not, the parts I sold off of it come to almost $8,000. Very Good profit there. Then I got a Yamaha Venture, put a good # of miles on it also. 1 of my fellow CHP bought a Gold Wing, took 1 ride on it and I bought a Wing. Got tired of all the Wing riders wearing the same shirts, pants, and whatever else you could see, I went to a FLHCH (I think that was the letters) and it got traded straight across for my Valkyrie. I have not looked back.

Front tire looks worn out.
I had a 750 in England. Really liked it.
