Was talking with my neighbor today. He has a 2003(?) Wing. He about fell over when I told him I was running 15w40 Rotella. Explained the no energy conserving in the bottom of the circle is ok mantra. But he was more concerned about the weight I run. 15w40 seem like a problem to anyone? I run this year round? comments? Concerns?

When i change oil this week im thinking about trying mobil 1 15 50 just to see if i can tell any difference.

15W40 Shell Rotella dino oil.  While i was still driving over the road i ran it in everything i had/have with an internal combustion engine.  RIDE SAFE.

15/40 is not a problem and in fact is a recomened grade in the owners manual. But the 15/50 will make less noise especially gear whine. I have used both and now stay with the 15/50 because of the reasons stated.

I'm currently running the 10-30 Honda synthetic and it's definitely noisier. Parts guy at stea...er...dealer said 10-30 is stock oil for Wings and they don't stock anything heavier in synthetic. That's probably why you got the weird look. Wish I could find the 15-50 stuff around here. My local Walmart doesn't have it. AutoZone does have the Rotella in 15-40. Probably try that next.

There are A LOT of people running Mobile One 15w/50. Me included. I tried Royal Purple 10w/40 and didn't like the noise it allowed.

10w-40 is recommended, but no issues I see of 15w-40 or 15w-50 oil especially if in hotter climates and don't run in colder climates much below 45 degrees. I stick with amsoil full synthetic 10w-40 since know will last 1 full year of riding plus in WI drive in 40 degree temps. If I lived down south in warmer climates, I would go the 15w-40 or 15w-50 route though.
Just don't ever go 5w-30 or 5w-40, too thin of oil.

and that's why I use the 15w/50... Got two others ( one winger and one Valker) to try it, and both made the same exact comment,,,"It's so much quieter, I have trouble finding neutral now,,there's no 'Clunk'.." YMMV of course...

 55,000 mostly HOT Florida miles using Rotella Synthetic 5W40. Tried the Mobil1 10W40 bike oil, couldn't tell the difference. Bought the bike with 57K, has 113K now. So much for the thin oil theory.

Same here. I've never noticed a big difference in sound with using the 15w50 vs. 10w40 but I have Cobras and wear earplugs (when I have the shield off). But Eddie switched to 15w50 and he says he noticed a sound reduction. He also noticed what I noticed which was smoother shifting.

5w-40 is not too thin. 10w40 is not the only recomended oil. 10w30 is also recomended. I use amsoil 10w30/30 HD diesel oil. 8k miles over two yrs oil analysis came back that it was still good for continued use. these engines do not wear, reason honda can use a 8k dino oil change interval using their honda brand oil which has proven to be of low quality through oil analysis everything u need to know about oil and what is and isn't too thin. http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/techno-world/567-motor-oil-101-a.html

suggest u run an oil analysis at your next 5k change, u will see u are changing a syn oil way too soon. www.bobistheoilguy.comblackstone and amsoil analysis are the most common and about the same price

Given the choice its my 1st pick for both bikes. My favorite oil due to its highest ZDDP content of any oil. Moly is good for our valves period, and doesnt affect the clutch one bit.

I have run 20w-50 Valvoline in Hondas for 25 years.... never had issues......
Sometimes you can get it cheap at Menards... I buy a S%^t load when it is...... Just have to keep an eye out.

Thats what I use for the air cooled only BMW R1200gsa and Amsoil 10w30 for the water cooled Valk in central Texas. No oil usage either bike, 71K on Valk and 32K on bmw. When I am out of the 10-30 oil (one more oil change left) I will go to 15w-40 just because I can on the Valk!
