Monterey, CA

« on: May 28, 2012, 09:22:21 PM »

Happy Memorial Day, everybody!  My name's Pete and I bought a '97 Tourer this weekend.  I'm currently in Monterey, CA where the Navy has decided I need to become a little more educated.

I'm new to the Valkyrie (although I've always been a fan), but I'm not new to motorcycling.  I've a few bikes before including a couple of VTXs and most recently a Suzuki M109r.  I've never been more comfortable on a bike than when I was riding this Tourer home on Saturday.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and say I'm looking forward to learning a lot about this awesome bike!

Welcome Pete! Nice choice and nice bike! I'm here in Southern California just east of downtown Los Angeles. Have 2 Interstates and have ridden one of them from Ushuaia, Argentina to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Great bikes and alot of fun too. The support from the people here in this club is awesome. Feel free to ask questions anytime. You will get more answers than you ever thought possible. Enjoy the Valkyrie!

Welcome Aboard, Pete.

Retired Navy here, and I call Santa Cruz home, although I am misplaced in Texas.

Headed out this morning for SC to visit family in the car with wife.  Have not had a chance yet to ride my Valk in CA asd much as I would like, although I have had it long enough to put over 100,000 miles on it in less than 5 years.

Enjoy it all.

Thank you all very much for your kind words of welcome.  I have been a part of other forums in the past (all motorcycle related) and I can already tell I'm going to like it here.   Cool

Welcome, Pete...you bought yourself a very nice Tourer. You're gonna love it! And you've come to the right place as far as learning about your bike. There's some very knowledgeable people here
for when you care to do your own wrenching.

You look like a good person to ask something I have wondered about. My Valk looks almost identical to yours. In thinking about getting a second motorcycle what would you say are the pros and cons of getting a VTX 1800 or a Suzuki 109? Any known major problems? Looks like they may both have even more power than the Valk, especially the 109. Thanks.

Thanks, Jake!  It was great meeting you and your wife.  I'm so excited about this bike.  I can't stop showing it off to all of my friends.  Nobody believes me when I tell them how old it is because of the great condition it is in.

I will tell you what I think about both bikes, but I'm sure others will have opinions that differ.

VTX1800: good-looking standard-type cruiser; tons of power; nice smooth ride (not as smooth as the Valk, but not bad either); very customizable; easy to add bags/windshield; will be viewed by others as "just another bike"

M109r: awesome-looking muscle cruiser; TONS of power; really choppy low end torque (can be helped with an ATRE, but not fixed); lots of parts out there (not as many as the VTX); not so easy to add bags, unless you want to spend a ton of money on Corbins; people will stop you every time you ride to ask you about what the heck you are riding; lots of reports of tranny issues, esp in the earlier models

I loved both of these bikes.  I would not hesitate to own either one again.  The best part of each is that they both come with awesome forums much like this one where you won't find a problem with the bike that they can't help you solve.

I know you guys love pictures, so here are some of mine:

Welcome Pete from another Pete (or maybe that makes one of us a Re-Pete Undecided).

First, thanks for your service to our country. As another Vet (Air Force, from another war, 'Nam) i really appreciate all of your sacrifices. Thanks! cooldude

Second, all three of your bikes look great. Of course, we are all going to be partial to your current ride, the Valk. Good to see you got the fastest color. I'm sure you will like it here.  Smiley

Nice going, my main squeeze is a 99 Interstate which I bought new but have bought and sold several Tourers. There are great riding bikes. I wish I lived in Calif, I would never be home. Good luck on your journey....

Hi there Pete,

Wow, what a timing my friend...and what a coincidence !
I live minutes away from you at Moss Landing.
I am also an ex-Navy man.
Well, that's not all.
Just a week before you I bought myself a 97 Valkyrie Standard and I was wondering if there's someone around where I live to ride with time to time.
It'll be great to meet you

This is my 10th bike in the past 54 years and 2n Valkyrie. (first one was a 99 Interstate).
Hope to meet you on the road. Please contact me!

All these comments from folks in Central California right now and I am sitting here in Santa Cruz area with family members and without my Valk.  One of these days I am going to ride it back out here and ride these hills on my favorite transportation.

Been here since last Friday going through the last of parents estate items with my siblings.  As I brought wife along, I had to take the car.

Graduated from Santa Cruz High School here back in 1959 and sure miss this climate.  Texas is nice at times, but surely gets hot in summertime.

Just wishing I had the Valk out here and could get together with some of you and ride for a day or three.

Stay safe and enjoy your ride.
