Wizard, Early Bird and I parted company with Bandit and co. in Alamogordo, NM on Tuesday morning. It was time to hustle home, deadlines to be met, so we hit the super slab. Tuesday, though it got a bit warm, was a pleasant day riding, covering almost 600 miles.
We spent the night in Kerrville, a place familiar to all of us. Somehow, being in a familiar place makes the trip home seem shorter. We hit the Cracker Barrel for breakfast and hit the highway, me leading on my Gold Wing.
I'm riding along, enjoying the cooler weather, when Wizard went flying past me. Now usually when he passes me, he's letting me know he's in need of facilities, but he was flying MUCH faster than that.
Then, to my horror, I see his bike wobbling all over the lane! I think my heart stopped right then and there. He brought the bike under control, moved over to the right lane and exited shortly afterward. Early Bird and I followed him to the gas station.
Wizard was shaking with anger. I was shaking with fear. I don't know if Early Bird was shaking or not.
A silver Mercedes had passed Wizard ON THE SHOULDER, the shoulder which was too narrow for a car. In so doing, the Mercedes clipped Wizard's saddlebag. He said he accelerated to get clear, moved over and backed off to let the guy by. After a very brief WTF? he blasted after the Mercedes, hoping to get the license number. Unfortunately, the bike developed a high speed wobble, speedo indicated 140, GPS read 135.
We stayed at the station until we quit shaking, then rode on. When we got to Luling, we stopped for lunch -- wonderful BBQ can help soothe frazzled nerves.
No injuries, thank God, to the bike or the rider. My ulcer, well, let's just say it isn't getting any better today.
I definitely prefer an uneventful day on the road.

That really is the only thing that scares me, cars/trucks coming out of nowhere and making my lane, theirs.... Glad Wizard made out OK, and y'all made it home safe. Good luck with that ulcer.... Hay

The ulcer has been around long before Valkyries were on the road, maybe before they were on the drawing board.
There's not a road anywhere that doesn't have potential for hazard -- if it ain't a car or truck horning in on your space, it could be a curve where you weren't expecting it.
Or an animal. On the road to Tucumcari, I almost got a nice turkey hen. Leaving Tucumcari, I got to "play" with a deer (or was it an antelope?) in the middle of the road. Fortunately, as far as putting food on the table, my aim was off both times. I'd rather get my deer or turkey with a gun than a Gold Wing, anyway.
As they say, all's well that ends well. We're looking forward to hitting the road in just under two weeks, headed for the Blue and Gray, and then points north and east. Ending up by going Inzane, of course.

When you are in the right lane doing 75, who would look for a car doing 80 on the shoulder ?? A survivor.
I do hope he got his mother to the hospital in time.

Wizard, I'm glad you survived the close call with death. I also hope the cage driver knows how close he came to death (if you'ld caught he). I just can't see anybody passing you.
