Saw that on the news this morning, as I was getting ready for work...  Pictures sent chills down my spine.

Like Jack said, the bikes didn't have a chance  Embarrassed

1 dead, 9 hurt in Fond du Lac Co. crash

Updated: Thursday, 31 May 2012, 9:50 PM CDT
Published : Thursday, 31 May 2012, 4:11 PM CDT
 Reporter: Alex Ronallo

TOWN OF TAYCHEEDAH - One person is dead and nine others injured following a crash on Highway 151 in Fond du Lac County.

According to the Sheriff’s Department one car and 12 motorcycles were involved in the crash in the Town of Taycheedah

It all happened at about 3:00 Thursday afternoon.

Captain Dean Will with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department told FOX 11 12 motorcycles were heading North on Highway 151 near Welling Beach Road and Gladstone Beach Road.

“They were all from Michigan on an extended cycle ride and they were on their way back home," said Will.

That’s when Captain Will said a car going south crossed the center line, hitting ten of the motorcycles.

Will was one of the first responders on scene.

“Multiple motorcycles, some yet on the road, some in the ditches, several individuals injured," said Will.

One of the motorcyclists died

3 motorcyclists and the car’s driver were airlifted to Theda Clark with critical injuries.

5 more motorcyclists were taken by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say it’s unclear at this time what made the driver of the car cross the center line, but the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are reconstructing the crash and investigating to find out what happened.

“This would have to be probably one of the worst as far as multiple vehicles involved.  I can’t recall in Fond du Lac County where we had that many cycles involved in an incident," said Will.

It’s something Will hasn’t seen in 33 years on the job and something he hopes not to see again.

It’s unclear if alcohol was a factor in the crash, but Captain Will said that is part of the investigation.

We now know the car's driver is a 25-year-old Calumet County man.

According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department all of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets and eyewear.  They are from Michigan and were traveling home from Milwaukee.

One never knows what the other guy is thinking or doing.  Ya can't be too defensive while riding.   I tend to stay away from larger groups of bikes, just not something I enjoy doing but, it appears to be all the fault of the cager.   Nothing will ever bring you back to your family and friends, doesn't matter who's fault, ride safe out there.

Wow that is so sad and tragic.  Cry That can happen anywhere and anytime and probably the bikers didn't know what hit them. I would bet that guy was texting! They should ban it nationwide!  tickedoff

As bad as it was, it's a miracle he didn't kill all of them. Sad

Lucky that more cyclists were not killed although one is too many.

I don't know if it is just me being more observant of the news, but lately the past year or so I see more and more local tragic head on collisions and serious accidents with cagers crossing the centerline hitting other vehicles.  Maybe we all need to get our heads out of our _sses and take a good long look on WHY this is happening more and more frequently?  Maybe it is a fluke, but those darn cell phones are becoming a huge problem that I see nearly everyday while driving.  Another huge issue is everyone is in such a huge hurry to get where they are going causing stupid accidents to occur.  Just last week I had an older (50's or 60's) couple husband and wife driving a newer Harley Davidson electra glide catch up to me on an on ramp to the main hwy. with me speeding up to 55 mph and I didn't speed up anymore than 55 mph since I was within 100 yards getting off on the next exit ramp in the same lane.  What he did was stupid - the cyclists got in the middle lane right next to me on the left, cracked open the throttle, and barely squeezed in directly ahead of me to get on the exit ramp to the right same one I was taking less than 100 yards up ahead.  What did that gain him?  Nothing since I followed him doing 62 mph all the way for the next 15 miles.  Road rage could easily happen in this instance and I could've easily floored my truck and no way would he have gotten over in front of me.  Back in my younger and stupider days, I would've done exactly that.  Now, I just shake my head and pray those idiots will be alive to see the next morning sunrise.

Here's some pure speculation on my part:

I hope the cops investigate whether or not the car driver was texting or using the phone.  It's an epidemic.

I totally agree!  Alcohol / driving relate deaths have always been, but it seems as the cell phone became popular and now with texting which i think all kids do and a lot of adults...except for me, I bought mine to talk not type! Grin  This may be my imagination but don't think so and wish they'd do a survey. I would like to see it banned totally, but ppl would still do it where they couldn't be seen. I'd like to see the FCC step in and make the phone carriers stop it. If Bloomberg can limit your soda intake to 16 ozs and foods, they can make the carriers do that to really save lives!!  Wink

Youngster could have been simply distracted by a incoming text message.

One second is all it takes to be killed on a roadway.

No cause yet, if it was not alchohol or drugs we will never know most likely why he crossed the centerline.

He may have had a seizure, a bee in the side window would do it.

Ride safe, ride with good seperation, more time to maneuver, NUMBERS are not always a gaurantee of safety,

neither is a helmet, they all had them.

God help all including the driver of the car who was critically injured.

Homicide charges likely. The punk-ass driver is a bail-jumper with outstanding charges and criminal history.

This site also has more pictures.

He had syringes on him and admitted to taking adderall and xanax daily. He has no recollection of being in Fon-du-Lac that day. Drug tests pending.

+1 , I just lost a friend on a Harley to a kid texting, drifted across the center line, head-on.

How many bikes have you got to hit to make your car look like this?

Bury the driver under the jail, whether breathing or not!
