My guess would be the pinion coupling. Just a guess.
Did it happen suddenly or gradually?

It sure sounds like u-joint, drive shaft splines or wheel drive splines.. Regardless, the rear wheel has to come off and you'll find it then..

Pinion cup and driveshaft and you'll be in business. Evay to replace and fairly cheap and a 100 bucks.

I agree with the others that it's probably your driveshaft/pinion cup that are trashed. A u-joint could, but probably wouldn't, make a grinding noise. The final drive splines could be your problem but the driveshaft/pinion cup splines are usually more apt to fail.

Just out of curiosity have you been doing the 10-15K miles lubrication maintenance on the rear splines and drive shaft/pinion cup?
