I have been watching these threads for a while. And I was wondering why people slam the Harley people. I look at them as one of us on two wheels. From what I have been seeing the slammers  are doing what they are complaining about what the HD people are doing. I somewhat believe in karma and feel maybe well will need each others help one day. Some people get a bike a tattoo a gun and a junkyard dog and think they are the worlds new bad-boy. This is not Halloween, this is real, the point is harmony.

Not true. For example, I've never burned a Harley but I can point you to several H-D owners who HAVE burned Hondas. A few have made the mistake of burning someone else's property and are now serving time for it.

Not all H-D owners are bad seed; I have a lot of friends (ex and current club members, motor officers, chopper builders, etc) who are salt-of-the-earth types and really don't care what anyone else rides.

The one type of rider we all take exception to is the catalog poser; that is, the person who thinks he or she can "buy" peer respect simply by plopping down Fantastic Plastic at the sales counter and riding off on their newly-decked-out toy. When in a public venue, these Wunderkids shun other riders and attempt to live up to the Reputation(tm) which was so carefully packaged and sold to them at the Genuine Accessories counter. Help each other out? The last time I stopped to help one of these folks out (who had a broken-down, late-model 'Glide) I was pretty much told to F-O.

Tell ya what:

When gatherings like "Bubba's Honda Drop" no longer take place...when I can roll up to an Easyriders event on my Valkyrie and not worry about some half-wit tampering with my ride while I'm inside enjoying the show...THEN I'll start treating owners of that brand as 'equals'.

But not until.

I agree Dan. It is all very childish. I love the response I got the other day, something like we didn't start this fight...

Didn't your mother tell you that was a pointless argument?  uglystupid2

Anyway, I like Harleys and have friends that ride them. Sure there are Harley riders that think they are on the only acceptable bike as there are Valk riders; whatever.  Cheesy

Let's just ride - on whatever bike you choose.  cooldude

I think if you delve into the minds of people who make these "derogatory comments" towards Harleys.....are talking more about some...(most?)....of the...People...that ride them....Ive been "buzzed" at red lights....Chili and I were stalked through the back woods by where we live last spring.....Ive endured so many "comments" and "snubs"...about "jap crap"..."rice burners"....over the years...I cant remember them all....just last week I was riding back from coffee in town...went by a newly installed light bu our house and there were two "Harley boyz"...sitting at the light...we made eye contact...I nodded...and they just looked at me as I went by...then one *smirked* and turned to his friend and made some kind of comment...and he laughed...

...after the "stalking incident" last spring, I refuse to acknowledge "most" of them...unless they wave first....as for the incident at the light last week...I just take a *mental note*...of what they look like...and if I perhaps catch em at a light...later on...I give them a *lesson*...in how to be humble...after having your socks blown off at a red light...  Cool

My old boss is a Harley fanatic.  My new boss is a Harley fanatic.  When I interviewed for my new job and I was sitting in my bosses office and I looked at the Harley clock, calendar, coffee mug, plac with his name, pictures, even the fridge in his office had a Harley emblem on it.  Every single day that I see for the last nine months he’s been dressed from head to toe with Harley clothing.  To me, that’s a person that is completely sold out to an image.  I have yet to see what his cycle looks like ‘cause he doesn’t ride it!  I’ve heard that it’s a beautiful cycle, and what I’ve seen of his metal works in the shop I believe it.  He’s told me that he’s only ridden his cycle once in the last two years!

Now for the kicker.  I keep a picture of my Valk in my toolbox with the wife and kids on it.  I get so much grief over buying a “jap” bike.  I’ve had signs hug over my cycle at work that say “Rice Burner Parking” when people see my cycle they say crap like “why can’t you buy American”.  I own one shirt that says Honda on it and my boss says to me “that would be a better shirt if it said Ford or Chevy”.

I love America.  I am first generation American.  It disgusts me when people wrap themselves up in the American flag and criticize others for not eating the same cheeseburger that they eat!  Or go to the same church that they go to.  I am an individual, I follow no crowd, and I ride alone because of it.  I believe that truly is the American way.  I’ve worked good and hard for my cycle, and it better damn well work hard and long for me, I don’t see that happening in a Harley.

That’s why I don’t like ‘em.

I agree with everything Bagger John just said...

Plus...

I don't respect machines... I respect people. Harley RIDERS I have no problem with and respect, and consider many good friends (Hi Hotglue!)

Harley OWNERS however? Pffft, you can't BUY my respect... There's a big difference between Harley RIDERS and Harley OWNERS...

And yeah, there are Honda OWNERS too, but the prevalence is far FAR lower. And, most Honda OWNERS don't go around telling people they shoulda bought a REAL bike.

Also, when it really comes down to it, if someone needs help, I'll pull over and help anyone, even the lawyer that's trying to buy a weekend in costume as one of the Wild Ones...

Well I am from the Motor City area and we probably have more cars, bikes and boats in the US, and from the almost 40 years of riding I can't say I have ever had an incident with hardcore or other wise. I respect people on a one to one bases not as a group or tag them for what brand they ride. Sure I have got the remarks and wise cracks but I look at them and individuals. See I realize that they maybe weak or have low self esteem, so I don't get angry I feel sad for them and walk away. I agree about respect we all want it, but keep in mind respect is earned it is not a given or something that is owed. You have to give it to get it.
Don't get me wrong I am guilty of lashing out from time to time, for example: This guy I worked with HD he has about $30 G's in his StreetGlide, sometimes making cracks, so we were on MetroParkWay on a roll. He nailed it then I did and as I passed him I think he pulled over to see if his bike was stuck in reverse. Never heard anymore cracks!!!!

Personally, I've been given the attitude by more Goldwingers than HD riders.  I ignore it unless I see it as a personal insult.

Funny thing about those two classifications...several of my H-D riding friends built their bikes from the ground up. One of the guys does work that is clean enough to feature on the cover of Hot Bike. And another? Let's just say that The Horse is more his speed, and I'm being extremely generous with that remark.

I've push-started both of these clowns when we've been on rides together. But they knew what to fix so the bikes would even fire in the first place; their cellphones are tools of last resort...not first, as is the case with so many.

Now let my friends go to our local cruise-ins, rallies, poker runs and whatnot; neither of them gets much acknowledgment from "Owners". Why? Because they're riding pans...shovels...knucks...and an occasional flathead thrown in for good measure while everyone else just HAS to have (for example) the latest-model Dark Custom. (We all know the best way to get there from here is a rattle-can filled with flat black Krylon, but I digress...)

This behavior is by no means limited to owners of the Milwaukee marque; a certain GWRRA chapter in the area (which will remain nameless) used to snub me because I rode an '83 GL1100A and at the time, they were all 1500 owners. Changing chapters helped that bit, by the way...

At a motorcycle rally we attended a few years back, Blondie was overheard remarking: "The behavior of a certain group of individuals is akin a bunch of 50-year-old high-school kids showing off their toys to one another."

True words, those. I don't see those attitudes at any of the brand-neutral events we attend...AMCA, VMD, Americade and a few others come to mind. Yet, when a collection of The Faithful gets together, it seems that any notions of neutrality somehow get left in the dust.

I've got a few mid-model-run Evo projects slowly going together in my basement: A couple of Softail-based choppers and an FXRS-based 'Streeter that'll be plumbed with a bottle and feature a number of trick items, most of which will be tucked away from view. Think the local Catalog Contingent will hang with me afterwards, or even recognize the time, money, sweat and busted knuckles which went into any of those projects? I for one ain't holding my breath.

Ya generally get what ya give.
I've met a LOT great folks on ALL kinds of bikes...... and have met a few jerks on ALL kinds of bikes.
Friendly folks tend to draw friendly folks..... just works that way.  The true jerks are few and far between.
If one finds most riders of different bikes to be jerks..... Maybe one should look inside 1st....

BTW.... I come here to read about Valks, and see what my fellow bike riding friends are up to and how they are doing.  If I find a real deal.... I may have another one someday.....
If I want to read about Harleys.... I have several sites I go to.... I can give ya the links if ya want to discuss Harleys.

Trust me when I say that I do not take the HD slams personally.  Have had LOTS of different bikes.
They are ALL just motorcycles.  All have had their good points, and all have had their bad points.
I like 'em all.... just wish I could afford to have one of each....LOL

John, from what you have written you and I are somewhat alike, except I don't expect anything in return. What I mean is I do it for myself and don't care about others think. I impress the person that pays my bills and that is me. I have more talent in my baby finger then most people will ever acquire in their life time. I have built everything that burns fuel and more but I do it because I enjoy it. Everybody needs a pat on the back but you can't ever depend or expect it if you do you will just frustrate yourself. The one thing you can always depend on is the fact that people are not dependable. So you have to look out for number one and if it comes your way from time to time it a positive. So my point is who cares what they say. You know why people make remarks and wise cracks, because they feel threatened , just a weak sheepish attitude. They don't have the stones to be different.

I've been Valk-ing for about 6 months now and so far the response I've received from Harley folks has been at worst indifferent to at best very welcoming.  Must be the California attitude thing, I guess.  Recently I was at a Blessing of the Bikes event, which was sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the Saints MC club.  A lot of bikers rode all the way up from the LA area to participate, and those guys stood around my metric and prayed for it, my wife and myself just as sincerely as they did for the hundred-odd HD's in the lot.  Very good experience.   In fact, the ONLY derogatory remark I heard was from the PASTOR OF THE CHURCH!  Not directed at my bike personally but generally at Honda, and it was really a mild, joking thing.  Personally, if I get attitude, the finger, whatever, then it's probably not someone I'm interested in knowing or riding with anyway.

Gotta add this story:  My boss, who rides a Fat Boy, has fired a few good-natured barbs at me about Honda this and that, never over the line or anything but he's got a good sense of humor.  The best was, I received one of those cool Valk models for Christmas from my wife, and it is prominently displayed on my file cabinet next to my desk.  One day I come in to work (coincidentally a day I rode the Valk in) and there's some black liquid under the model - along with a post-it telling me I have an oil leak.  Crazy boss poured some coffee under my Valk model!!! (Had to give him credit for creativity!)  Grin

Bladedog,

see, the coffee was just a sign that he's not use to seeing a cycle that didn't leak oil....

actually, my boss has told me that he likes my bike, i've been wanting to get him on a ride for the longest time now but i think that there's a lot of politics in the office....

I rode Honda for over 30 years.  Like Hotglue says, you meet jerks on all kinds of bikes.  I belonged to GWRRA for a while, got tired of Harley bashing and this was long before I got my Harley.  I lost interest in the GWRRA, even tho I owned a WIng and then the Valk Interstate.

I feel the people who ride have enough to deal with from the anti-motorcycle crowd as it is.

I try to remember that when someone bashing Harley, it's not intended as an insult to me but
it does get old.  I also read several Harley boards and haven't seen much brand bashing on them
although I'm sure it happens.

I loved my Interstate but now I love my Harley. I have no regrets about buying my Harley.  Will I ever ride another Honda, hard to say. I rode the new Harley Ultra Classic and really like it. Not sure I am a Wing guy, great bikes but I like to see the engine.

I am a Harley rider whos waves to all brands.

Ride safe and ride often.

I agree with the RIDERS vs OWNERS thing. I have zero problems with harley RIDERS, but
the harley OWNERS get under my skin! I've really cut down on my harley bashing, it's just
not that much fun anymore. I'll still throw one out occasionally. Quick story....at my last
job I was one of the few non-harley people. EVERY time we had a day off I would invite
one or two of the harley boys to go riding...NONE of them ever accepted. Not one time
in the 3 years I had my Valk there did any ONE of them invite me to go riding when they
had one planned! Can you guess why??? I rode the "wrong brand"! These are the people
I direct my harley bashing towards. Flip side..a couple at church have an Ultra Classic and
they ride as many miles as I would like to...and they'll ride with anybody that can behave
like an adult. This is a good example of the different kinds of harley people. Smiley

P.S.  I stand by my statement that I wouldn't keep a harley if somebody gave me one..and
yes I've ridden 3 or 4 of them. Also, if you'll notice, I never capitalize "harley"..never will.

I love these threads, where people get to rant about who rides what, and the attitudes some folks carry around.  I don't care if you wear Harley everything, and you just bought it today.  Ride your bike, I'll ride mine and lets all just get along and if you can't then go ride somewhere away from me.  I rode well over 100,000 miles on my valk, that much on a triumph, and again on several Honda's over the years.  Currently I'm on a Harley Ultra that I traded my 06 Gold wing in on.  I have gotten more attitude from Wing riders than from all the Harley folks combined!  Let's just ride.  Having said that, I leave in 5 days for a cross country ride from Tampa to San Fran, hitting the Sierra Nevada's, Cascades, Henry, Virgin, Rocky, Grand Teton, Oachita and Ozark mountains on the way home.  Will be gone for a month, on a V-twin.  I'll ride with anyone along the way that wants to ride, and I wave to everyone too.  I just hope parts don't shake off on the way, LOL.  I ride one and I have a sense of humor!

I've been friends with several Harley riders for the last 30 or so years, it has always been fun and expected to trade cracks back and forth. If my memory was perfect I could fill a book with all the cracks I've made and created several originals. I've owned several Goldwings and presently own 2 Valkyries and a Spyder. My first 3 bosses are die hard Harley guys and we trade cracks regularly the top Boss still believes I put the drip pan under his bike a couple of years ago. There was an incident where I smoked one of his counterparts last year and was a possibility of some hard feeling directed toward me. When I informed my boss about the incident his comment was " if anything is said just tell them your boss is a die hard Harley guy and even he knows better than mess with a Valkyrie" I would have given anything to have had a tape recorder or a witness at that moment. As for them waving, no problem However on the Spyder I do get snubbed at times. I like the newer Harleys, styling and resale value, However when it comes to durability and dependability  I'll stick to the Valk.

I don't have anything against Harleys.  I actually like most of them.  The biggest problem I have with the Harley bikes themselves is that they're just too darn small for me.  I'm a full sized person and I need a full size bike to ride (just like I need a full size truck to drive)....and Harley's are just too small for me.  I feel cramped on one.   Nothin' personal Harley, but if you'd make 'em bigger, stretch 'em out a bit (Ok, alot) and put a fatter/longer/bigger tank on one.....I might buy one.

As far as Harley owners goes.....I've really not had anything directly said to me, other than a Fat Boy owner at work said that he'd be too afraid to ride my Valk because of it's size.  His Fat Boy sitting next to my Valk makes his bike look like a moped.  Our boss is a Road King rider and he's die-hard Harley, but he's never trash talked my Valk or any other brand that I'm aware of.

That said.......when riding, if I see you, I'll wave at you.  While out riding, I've been consistently snubbed by two distinct groups of riders.  Goldwing owners and Harley owners.  I've actually had riders on both brands of bikes look straight at me, see me wave, then turn their heads and pretend that they don't see me.  I have yet to figure that out as to why they would do that other than to be a total a'hole snob.

That's never happened to me with any, and I mean any other brand, type or style of bike....even sport bike riders.

I have a Harley and a Valk. I LOVE them both but for different reasons. My Harley fits me. I feel like it's a part of me when I'm on it. It has nothing to do with the branding.

I LOVE my Valk for the power. It's comfortable. I just got it 2 weeks ago. I LOVE my Valk family. In Tucumcari my VALK family lowered the bike for me so that I would be safer and so I could actually touch the ground. I don't have a HARLEY family.

I can't think of a better group of people in the entire world than the Valk group.

Mo Lee you spoke of smoking one of the boys. A lady once asked if I were an animal what would I be . I tolder her a Ferret because they are curious mischievous without malice. Well I stray to the dark side on occasion. True story:  I was on my way home and I just jumped on I-94       E-way. Next to me just a little behind me was I believe a Tricked out Road King with a guy and his lady on the back. He then gave it a little throttle to get a little head of me. I noticed he kept glancing in his mirror at me, so I gave my Valk a little more gas and got a little head of him. We did this a few times and we were going pretty good, I could tell his engine was starting to get to the top. At this point he was a slightly a head of me. I looked at his hot lady with her designer outfit and she looked at me and gave me this arrogant, crooked smile and that's all it took. I then went full throttle and I could see her in my mirror looking over guys shoulder like to say what just happened. I thought I was going to have to pull over because I was laughing so hard, but I made it. So sometimes we stray. I surely didn't make friends that day.

Just for chuckles,

Dan

From what I have been seeing the slammers  are doing what they are complaining about what the HD people are doing.

I've never had that problem. Of all the Harley events I go to I have never worried about my bike. Never locked the bags either. I even tried to join a HOG chapter but my make of bike was not on the list.....

My take on things is we 'bash' HD riders cause there are so many. If there were alot more jap bikes out there I'm sure we would do the same about them. There are alot of Valk riders who have the same attitude also.
I ride with alot of HD's and will continue to do so. Maybe cause Kit and I are young but my HD friends are more to my style of riding/rally/parting. And there are a few here that fit that also. I have alot of HD clothing, which I hope to get more of at the B/G ride in June. I also have some HD acc on my Valk. Only cause they are made better for the price. I love Easyriders shows. Love there rags esp 'In the Wind'. My favorite.
I have never felt unwelcome at any HD event. We have 3 big dealers nearby and I always show up on my Valk and will park up front with the rest of the bikes. Never had anyone spout off about my ride. Been asked alot of questions about it but thats all. You all remember Thors Hammer hand off from Ind to MI? There were a couple Outlaws and a Mongol getting gas next to us. Nice as can be and asked alot of questions about my bike. Never felt uncomfortable about leaving my bike anywhere other bikes have been. I attend the demo rides. Never had a Honda demo ride. Free hog roast, free Marsh Tucker Band concerts, free .38 special concerts. Lets see Honda do this. I attend Wetzel Ohio rally every year for the past 7 yrs. Its 99% HD and has a few gangs in attendance. I heard all the rumors about going. 'They'll trash your bike, they'll jump it into the Bar & Shield shaped pond'. I was more nervous about the 'type' of people there from what I heard from others. Now I can't get enough of the place. I go back to see old friends and make new ones. Never felt intimadated as I roll up and park at the Full Throttle or Broken Spoke amoungst the see of HD's.
Would I own one? Yes. Only after the Valk gave out and others have become sparse. Too young for a Wing but will take a SE Road Glide. I'm not a die hard Honda fan but I am a die hard Valkyrie fan.
The only bashing around here is if you trailer or not.  Undecided This is all in good fun and I like reading the posts. Makes this board intersting. Lets keep hearing all story from the members!  cooldude

Once on us 50 in cenral kansas, the missus and I were on my tourer running about 75 and used a  passing lane to pass a string of 15 or so Harleys running about 65.  No malice being shown or being recieved.  The lane ended somewhat closer than I realized, and I had to open her up to get to the end before it merged to a single lane.  Doing 115 indicated when we cleared and made the merger.  I don't think  I offended anyone, and certainly didn't mean to if I did. Kind of surprised the missus, though!  Embarrassed  Cool Hoser

All my friends ride HD's. Only bike they ever saw me on on a ride was my valk. Speial aoccasions I would drag out the old indian or super X, maybe hit the twisties on the bandit but, 90% of the time on the valk. Never heard a bad word abou tit nor anyone disrespect it.

well, Had one little man, 5'7" maybe, 140lbs. Ina a bar here, traderlee's, biker bar. talking across the bar to a good friend tom who, had just purchased an ultra 2 days before, he was showing it off that day when I blew past him coming to traders.lol He came in bought me a beer and thanked me for ripping the paint off the left side of the tank(with a smile on his face.). I made a statement which I live by, "I dont care how big your v-twin is, Im still faster". The little man decided to pipe in..."you can beat me, drag me, leave me in the dust, but remember this, I will always be cooler than you."
Well, Tom ran around the bar, and grabbed my arm in mid air before I hit him the third time. Little man got on his 883 sporty and left.

I love HD's as much as any other bike. I have owned them all. But if it werent for little m****r F*****R's like that, harley would be outa business.....

I felt really bad afterwards and, well, I bought tom a beer cuz he had to get off his stool...

ok if i cant dis on harley because it hurt someons feelings..........................does this mean that i cant dis on rednecks anymore? or chevys or the japs that are making equipment so small that i cant fit my fat butt into where i need to get to do the repairs?

i can see if i had said "hey your a freaking loser for owning a harley or singled you out as a person for owning/wanting to own one.

come on you truckers lets show your sencitive side cause some one made a crack about you driving a mack, kenworth, pete,or a intertrashahaul.

opps now that i have gone back and read this i noticed that i used the word fat..................
i'll be back in a few cause i an going to go beat the crap out of myself for picking on fat people.

One thing that you made me recall is about the Goldwingers and I say ditto about that.  Keep in mind that the Valk is the Goldwings evil little brother that does things that the Goldwing would never do. Allot of good input but these are you actual experiences and they are fact. My issue is when someone get information from there babysitters, cable guys, plumbers, girlfriends, brother and uses that as fact about a group, not actual incident. I think the thing that bugs me is when people make accusations based on hear say and not facts. I guess I just don't like to see people picked on no matter who they are. All though the last time I checked this was still America and we still have free choice and free speech. I respect people even if they don't give it back. Don't get me wrong I am not a wimp, I just like to play nice.
